Use inside measurements to find a sink with similar measurements. Ensure you place your measuring tape at the top of the sink and measure the length (side to side), width (front to back), and depth (from the middle of the basin to the top of the sink).
To find the width, measure from the back edge of the sink to the front edge. The standard size is 22 inches.
A 33" sink will undermount into a 33" cabinet if you strap or harness, not clip or block, the sink in place. Disregard the sink manufacturer's instructions please; I've done this hundreds of times.It is not a difficult process at all.
To determine the maximum sink size for your base cabinet, measure the interior of your cabinet and subtract two to three inches from each dimension. A 36″ base cabinet can handle a 33″ sink at most; a 30″ cabinet should be fitted with a sink no larger than 27″ wide.
A typical 33 x 22-inch sink will fill a 36-inch base cabinet. If you're replacing a sink, make sure it fits the existing cutout. If the cabinet allows, you may be able to install a larger sink by expanding the cutout. A farmhouse sink may require a special cabinet size.
Guidelines recommend including at least a 24” wide landing area to one side of the sink, and at least an 18” wide landing area on the other side.
Standard-sized kitchen sinks measure 22 inches by 30 inches.
While the front-to-back measurement of the sink typically remains the same (roughly 22 inches) due to the size of most cabinets, the length of various kitchen sinks can vary immensely. This size range will cover most of the options you'll find when shopping.
Small: From 15 to 20 inches long and nine to 12 inches wide, with a depth between 5-3/4-in. and seven inches. Medium: From 20 to 30 inches long, 19 to 24 inches wide and about seven inches deep. Large: From 30 to 50 inches long, 19 to 24 inches wide and about five inches deep.
As discussed above, the basic difference between a sink and a wash basin lies in their area of installation or application. The sinks are mostly used in kitchens and pantries and the basins are used in toilets and washrooms.
Choose one that matches your countertop or, if you prefer drama, choose one with a contrasting color. The burnished brown tones of copper and the clean silvery hues of stainless steel work especially well with stone and solid-surface countertops. Shape: Undermount sinks can be square, rectangular, round or oval.
For a 42" corner sink base cabinet, you'll want to shop like you have a standard 30" cabinet. In other words, find a sink that has an overall dimension of no more than 29", giving you a bowl size of 27". Often, not always, the sink will be set back 3" from the front frame of the cabinet.
For example, a 36" cabinet can accomodate a 30-32" sink. Next, measure front to back to find cabinet depth (standard cabinets have a 24" depth). If your countertop has a backsplash, subtract its thickness from this figure. In general, most cabinets can accommodate a sink that is 20 inches front to back.
Most round bathroom sink bowls are 16 to 20 inches in diameter, while most rectangular sinks are 19 to 24 inches wide and 16 to 23 inches front to back. The typical basin depth is 5 to 8 inches.
Cleanup/Prep Sink Landing Area: Include at least a 24-inch-wide landing area to one side of the sink and at least an18-inch-wide landing area on the other side. 12. Preparation/Work Area: Include a section of continuous countertop at least 36 inches wide and 24 inches deep immediately next to a sink.
OVERHANG - The countertop extends over the edge of the sink on all sides by approximately 1/8" - 1/4". Use caution with this installation to be sure that accessories such as colanders or cutting boards will fit properly. REVEAL - The countertop edge sits approximately 1/8" - 1/4" back from the edgeof the sink rim.
With a double bowl sink, you can: Use one side for food prep and one side for washing dishes as you go or for stashing dirty dishes until you can get to them. Soak dishes in one side while you wash in the other side.
Another larger option, that provides more variety in its use is a 29" double bowl sink. This sink will fit in your 30" kitchen sink base cabinet and provide you with two 16x13"basins.
Measure the opening width under your existing sink (or where the new one will be installed) from left to right. This measurement is your cabinet size. Then, allow at least 2-3 inches on both sides for mounting hardware. For example, a 36" cabinet can accomodate a 30-32" sink.
The length of the sink you order needs to be less than the width of the interior of the cabinet, with a little room to spare. For example, 36'' wide cabinets are often outfitted with 33'' sinks. It's important to know how the sink will be mounted, with drop-in and undermount sinks being the two most popular options.
