Properly installed paving stones will not be easily susceptible to weed growth. And while choosing the best materials for your project will help prevent weed growth, weeds are experts in finding places to grow. Even just a couple seedlings can quickly spread throughout your entire patio.
Vinegar is a great weed killer because it won't cause discoloration, damage pavers, or affect nearby plants. It draws moisture out of the plant tissues and roots, stopping the formation of weeds. Transfer white vinegar into a spray bottle, then spray the vinegar along the cracks.
While a thorough cleaning, sanding, and sealing process can significantly hinder weed growth and prevent them from taking over your paver system, it is important to understand that sealing alone cannot completely eradicate weeds.
The most common complaint we hear from our clients is “the weeds are growing in the cracks between the pavers and I'm sick of dealing with it!” Contrary to popular belief, they don't grow from under the pavers. Instead, airborne weed seeds blow around and drop to the paver surface.
Paver sealant is a great tool to keep paver driveways, patios, walkways, and pool decks, in mint condition, but it's not always necessary. While it's not a must-have, pavers that aren't sealed typically grow weeds in the cracks, lose color over time, and can even have shifting caused by a lack of joint sand.
You're wondering what happens if you don't seal pavers. Your pavers won't disintegrate if you don't seal them, but they'll likely fade much sooner than if you applied sealant. You'll also need to clean them more often, and the stains won't be as easy to remove.

Using Baking Soda

To keep brick paving weed-free, you can choose from several strategies: spraying with herbicides, blasting seedlings with a flamethrower or hand weeding. Following up on any of these by filling joints with polymeric sand can dramatically reduce the problem long-term.
Compared with ordinary sand, a special sand enriched with sodium silicate drastically reduced weed growth. In fact, as long as it remained reasonably free of dirt and dust, the enriched sand more or less completely prevented weed germination and growth.
Power or pressure washing will clear out the weeds from a Cobblelock block paving driveway or path, so they are gone ... but only for for a short time. But although the surface looks good when we leave a customer's property, neither softwashing nor power or pressure washing actually kills the weeds.
Polymeric sand is the most popular and useful filler used under brick pavers. It is a mixture of fine sand, adhesive and is most widely used in paver joints. Typically, polymeric sand lasts for up to 10 years. But if you use high-quality polymeric sand, it can last for approximately 15 years.
Baking soda is the key ingredient to killing unwanted weeds from any cracks in your your sidewalk or driveway. It's the same ingredient you use when baking cookies, so you don't have to run out of your house and buy something new. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, which is phytotoxic to plants.
Similar to cleaning pavers with muriatic acid, avoid an intense concentration of bleach, as it can damage the pavers.
When looking for alternatives to polymeric sand, you will also want to find high quality materials. There are other products, such as EnviroSAND, EnviroSTONE and EnviroPATH on the market that are able to stop water erosion from occurring.
Weedblocker is a specially formulated polymer modified joint sand used with pavement systems utilizing segmental concrete pavers, clay pavers or natural stone; concrete slab joint applications or filling gaps between segmental retaining wall blocks. Weedblocker becomes activated when combined with water.

Fall or spring is a great time of the year to seal pavers. Cooler weather allows the sealer to penetrate into the pavers unhindered. Pavers will have an adequate amount of protection for when it's time to seal again. Make sure to keep leaves and other debris off the pavers while they are drying to avoid blemishes.
The good news is that pavers are known for their durability and lifespan. Made of clay, concrete, natural stone, or even porcelain, pavers can last 20-25 years without any major repairs with proper care and maintenance. If they are properly cared for and sealed, concrete pavers can last upwards of 50 years.
How long should I wait before sealing my new pavers? Typically 60-90 days. The main reason to wait is so that efflorescence can work its way to the surface and be cleaned off. The more the pavers get wet, the quicker this happens.
