Run the machine: If your washing machine is fairly new, it should have a self-cleaning cycle. If it does, simply add the amount of bleach specified in the ownership manual and run this cycle.
Self-Cleaning Cycle: Many washing machines come with a specific cycle that uses hot water and sometimes a cleaning agent to clean the drum and internal components. This cycle helps to remove detergent residue, mold, and odors.
When doing your normal laundry, just switch the Auto Self Clean setting on, and after rinsing, it automatically starts operating before the final spin. Clean water washes away dirt from the outside and bottom of the stainless steel tub and the inside and bottom of the outer tub.
It needs to be empty when running the clean cycle. Open the washer door and pour one cup (250 ml) of liquid bleach or other washing machine cleaner directly into the wash basket. If not using bleach, 1 cup (250 ml) of vinegar or a store bought washing machine cleaner can be used.
Run an empty, regular cycle on hot, using two cups of distilled white vinegar instead of detergent. Add the vinegar to the detergent dispenser. (Don't worry about harming your machine, as white vinegar will not damage clothes.) The hot water-vinegar combo removes and prevents bacteria growth.
Use a combination of white vinegar and baking soda to naturally clean your washing machine; pour half a cup of baking soda into the drum followed by two cups of vinegar in the detergent dispenser, then run a hot wash cycle. For stubborn grime and odors, consider commercial washing machine cleaners.
It's also a good practice to run Self Clean at least once a month if you don't use your washer frequently.
Most machines have a “clean” cycle that can be run without a load in it to flush the drum and internal components of excess dirt, bacteria, or any other buildup of contaminants that can lead to dirty or smelly laundry as you run repeated wash cycles through the machine.
Your laundry will smell.
When your front load washer doesn't get regularly cleaned, your laundry is likely to come out smelling bad due to the mold, grime, and other debris that build up in your washer drum. To stop this from happening, it's important to clean all of the grime and mold out of your washer regularly.
For instance, if you're transitioning from washing heavy fabrics, like towels, to lighter items, an empty cycle can help prepare the machine and eliminate any residue. It's also a great idea after washing heavily soiled clothing, as this can help clear out any lingering dirt or detergent.
It's generally recommended to clean your washing machine once a month, especially if you want to prevent musty odours from forming inside the drum and keep your clothes smelling great. Sometimes, however, you need to pay your machine a bit more attention, and it may be necessary to thoroughly clean the washer.
Run a Self-Cleaning Cycle
Don't use laundry detergent to clean the tub of your washer. Laundry detergent is for laundry and can build up a residue inside the hoses and other components of the washer; and over time it can provide a moist environment for mold and bacteria to grow.
Pour 2 cups of vinegar into the detergent dispenser, filling all the sections. Then, select the largest load and hottest water setting and run a complete cycle. Pour 1 cup of baking soda into the washer drum and run a second cycle set to the largest load and hottest water setting.
The washing machine has a “Auto Clean” programme for its internal parts that must be run with no load in the drum. For maximum performance you may want to use either the detergent (i.e. a quantity 10% the quantity specified for lightly-soiled garments) or special additives to clean the washing machine.
“For removing odors, I would say vinegar.” Some people, however, prefer white vinegar because it's not as harsh as bleach. Unless, of course, your washing machine has been completely neglected, and is now a breeding ground for bacteria and germs, and you want a power cleaner.

Laundry soils, detergent and hard water minerals build up in areas you can't see and mold and mildew can thrive in the washer lid and the door, according to green cleaning coach Leslie Reichert.
For a homemade option, you can try cleaning your washing machine with vinegar. Just pour two cups of distilled vinegar into your detergent drawer. You can also use soda crystals (or baking soda) to clean your washing machine. Sprinkle half a cup into your drum and then let your washing machine run on a hot setting.
For a front-load washer, put 2 tablespoons of borax or oxygen bleach and 2 tablespoons of washing soda in the tub of the washing machine. For a top-loading machine, put 1/2 cup of each of the powders into the wash tub. Run at the hottest temperature or use the “clean tub” setting on the washer.
Traditional self-cleaning cycles heat the oven between 800°F and 900°F, helping turn soil and spills to a powdery ash you can then wipe away. They utilize only heat—no chemicals—and are built to withstand high temperatures. They're also built for safe use, but you should expect some smoke and odor from your oven.
It is not recommended to use vinegar in your washing machine. Because of its acidic nature, vinegar can corrode some parts of your washing machine over time, especially rubber elements.
If you are out of affresh® washing machine cleaner, you can use liquid chlorine bleach. Pour bleach into the detergent dispenser, then run the hot water wash cycle.
Professionals use a gas-powered pressure washer, a surface cleaner attachment, and a careful selection of specialized nozzle tips, surfactants, bleaches, degreasers, and oxalic acid for pressure washing.
