Keeping your white cabinets white

Dark Cabinets Can Feel Heavy
In a smaller space, dark cabinetry can create a heavy, even oppressive atmosphere, especially if the lighting is dim. On the other hand, dark colours often do a wonderful job warming up an extra-large kitchen, which would feel sterile with wall-to-wall white.
"Yellow" cupboards are often caused by defective, aging finishes or airborne grease that settles over everything (even the ceiling!) over time, causing sickly yellow and tacky surfaces. An all-natural homemade cleaning solution can work wonders.
Lack of direct light or excessive moisture (like in a dank bathroom) can cause your door to discolor. Exposure to ammonia or tobacco smoke can also discolor your door. White paint may is also yellow if it is installed in close proximity of a heat source like a stove or radiator.
Yellowing is often a natural and common side-effect of the drying process and the aging of oil paint. Aging is a common cause of white painted cabinets turning yellow and white paint turning yellow on wood.
To keep your white cupboards looking bright and fresh, create a cleaning solution with one cup of vinegar, one tablespoon of baking soda, and two cups of warm water. Dip a rag in this solution, wring out the access liquid, then wipe down your cupboards.

Tone down the yellow by adding a small amount of violet paint. Violet is a complementary pigment to yellow. When added, it will "knock the color down," or make the color darker without reducing it's intensity. If you notice the yellow is too bright before you paint, add violet to the mix.
The most effective way to neutralize pale yellow is to use purple (or violet). Yellow-orange must be neutralized by using blue.
A diluted solution of mild dish soap and water is tough enough to get the job done, but will be gentle on the door. One tablespoon of dishwashing liquid in a gallon of water should do the trick!
Water-based polyurethane is well-suited for low-sheen flat, eggshell or satin latex paint. If you painted your cabinets with any of these paints, apply a water-based poly over the top to prolong the life of the finish. Do not apply water-based polyurethane over the top of gloss latex and acrylic enamel.
Apply a marker to flaws that match the color of the cabinetry staining. Fill in dents and worn spots with a putty. Apply a new coat of paint, or re-stain the cabinets to restore its former look and feel. Use a polyurethane coating to assist with the removal of cabinet imperfections.
To clean white laminate cabinets, create a mixture of 1 tablespoon baking soda and 1 gallon of warm water. Allow the baking soda to dissolve in the water. Then, use a soft cloth to rub the mixture on to the cabinets to scour away grime and stains.
