The best way to wash 100% cotton is to hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. If you must machine wash then use the delicate cycle and use cold water. Don't use hot water as that will shrink pure cotton. Another problem with cleaning cotton with hot water is that it can cause some of the dye to leak.
100% cotton is generally pretty forgiving. You can machine wash it on high temperature (although you don't have to) and on a normal washing cycle. Unless it's brightly colored, in which case you might want to turn it down to 30° in order to prevent discoloration.

Cotton can shrink up to twenty percent from its original size when you place it in hot water or subject it to high heat conditions. This does not apply to a cotton-blend tee made with polyester. Polyester shrinks less than three percent in a hot wash.

Does cold water shrink clothes? No! Washing clothes in cold water can actually help to prevent them from shrinking. Hot water, on the other hand, is more likely to cause fabric damage and shrinkage.
Place the requiredamount of detergent (follow the dosage instructions on the pack) on the stains before you load the clothes in the washing machine. Put your cotton fabrics in a small basin filled with cold water. After soaking the fabric for 15 to 30 minutes, gently rub the stain.
Avoid hot water – high temperatures will cause cotton to shrink, so opt for a delicate cycle or a cold wash to avoid your favorite cotton items from shrinking. Flip them inside out – to protect the outside of the garment from the abrasive agitation of the washing process, turn them inside out.
Luckily, cotton sheets are very easy to care for. Simply toss them in the washing machine with your favorite detergent on a warm water setting for the best results. Line dry or tumble dry on low or medium heat and promptly remove from the dryer for less wrinkles.
Then you can wash them at 60 degrees or higher. From this temperature, bacteria, viruses and fungi also die well.
