Make sure the washer is unplugged. Now if you look through the top of the washer down to the latch, you'll see a pull tab hanging off the bottom of the latch. You'll need to use a stick or something to reach that pull tab. Pull the tab down and that will manually unlock the door.
You can take a putty knife and push in slightly on the lid strike under the lid and raise the lid at the same time. Or you can raise the top to get your clothes out by removing the screws behind the control panel and slide the top forward and tilt it back to access the bottom side of the lid lock.
Turn the knob clockwise until all the lights turn on and then press and hold the start button for 5 seconds to reset the errors. Try a new cycle and wait 30 minutes. If it won't run a cycle, pull up the errors again and if you get the 1st error, replace the latch. If you get the 2nd error, check the drain.
Unplug the washer for one minute. Plug the washer back in and lift and lower the lid six times within a 12-second period.
Turn the washing machine off and unplug it.
Then, unplug the machine and wait 5-10 minutes. Try pulling the handle again to see if the door opens. Some locks automatically flip into the unlocked position after 5-10 minutes so that you can get your clothes during a power outage.
Washer Control Reset
To reset the electronic controls on your washer, shut off the circuit breaker or fuse to the washer or unplug the washer for 2 minutes. For models that have a timer control knob, turn the knob around and back to any position other than final spin for the interrupted cycle. Then, restore power.
Water left in the machine is also a common cause of a locked washing machine door. Running a spin/drain cycle can often fix this issue, but if it fails, the machine may need to be drained manually. The door catch, handle, or some part of the door catch mechanism may be broken, preventing the door from opening.
If the power is removed, the lock should open automatically because it is spring-loaded. If there is no power to your washer and the lid is locked, your washer has malfunctioned. You will need to service to find the fault and get it repaired.
Initially, unplug the machine and wait 5 minutes before plug back in. Then power on the machine, and press the start button. Reboot the washer by using the open/close lid reset. Just open and close the lid 6 times in 12 seconds after you press the start button.
Most washers will have a manual release to unlock the mechanism and allow you to open the door or lid. The release is normally accessible from below the door lock, or on some models, from inside the soap dispenser housing.
Normally waiting for the cycle to end is all you need to do to unlock the door, or turn your washer on if it's off. If you get stuck, though, you can drain the water from front load washers using the emergency drain hose; once the water is gone, the door will unlock.
Unplug and Wait: Unplug your washer and wait at least two minutes before plugging it back in. Manual Control Panel: If your washer has a manual control panel, turn the knob to any setting other than the final spin. Restore Power: Plug the unit back in and restore power to your laundry room.
The Washer will automatically drain if left in a paused state with the lid closed for more than 24 hours and water is present. If you need to drain out the water and spin the clothes, you must select the "Spin Only" or "Drain and Spin" cycle, then press the "Start/Pause" button.
