Inspect the pilot hole and use a wooden toothpick to clean it out. If the buildup is excessive and cannot be removed, you will need to replace the igniter to restore your gas oven. Once you are done cleaning, turn on the oven and observe the igniter to see if it glows red-hot during the ignition process.
For hot surface ignitors, gently clean the ignitor with a soft brush or cloth to remove any dirt and debris buildup. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as these ignitors are fragile. For spark ignitors, carefully clean the ignitor electrode and the surrounding area to ensure proper spark ignition.
Unclog the fuel ports. You can use anything thin enough to get in there but a paperclip will do just fine for this part. Clean any grease or gunk off with rubbing alcohol. To keep it all contained, try using a Q-tip. Replace the burner cap, reconnect your stove, and see if the clicking stops.
Dirty electrodes are easy to fix—all you need to do is clean them using a cotton swab and a bit of rubbing alcohol. Gently rub the swab over the metal tip of the electrode, let it dry, and attempt to start the grill. It may take a few tries to get the electrode totally clean.
Next, look for any buildup of grease, food bits, or other dirt. This stuff can stop the igniter from heating up properly.
Locate the igniter near the oven burner at the back of the oven. Use a soft brush or a can of compressed air to gently remove any food particles, or grease from the igniter. Be careful not to apply excessive force to avoid damaging the igniter. Do not use water or any liquid cleaner on the igniter.
The quickest way to check if a piezo igniter is working is by determining whether you hear a loud snap when you press or turn the igniter. The snap is the spring-loaded hammer hitting the quartz crystal. If you hear it, but still, there is no spark igniting your grill, it may need replacing.
Direct spark ignitors will have spark wires, while hot surface ignitors have an element. You can also use an air compressor to remove carbon deposits that are preventing normal function. You can use either a soft cloth or a scuff pad to gently wipe the ignitor's surface.
Because of this, igniters have a 3-5 year life expectancy. They will eventually crack and need to be replaced. If you suspect that you have a damaged HSI, you will most likely be able to change the part yourself. Like a light bulb, they are a regular replacement item.
One of the more common and easy-to-fix reasons a gas stove keeps clicking is that grime, grease, and corrosion around the burner heads are interfering with the gas flow. Cleaning around the burner heads, igniter, and pilot hole can fix the clicking issue.
A gas oven igniter replacement costs $150 to $325 on average, depending on the brand and model. A new oven igniter costs $20 to $50 for the part alone. A broken igniter results in the oven not heating, clicking noises without lighting the gas, and gas leaks.
If you have a faulty furnace ignitor, it won't produce that tiny spark to heat the air coming from your Furnace. Your heater blows air at the same temperature as the cold outside air without it. Cold air blowing through your vents is a good sign that you have a heating problem within the Furnace.
DOES THE IGNITER MAKE A CLICKING NOISE? Make sure that the igniter is making a clicking noise when you press the igniter button. If it doesn't click, then the wires may not be connected properly, the battery may be dead or installed incorrectly, or the igniter module may have failed.
Many models have a battery in the igniter module. If your model is one of these, you'll want to try changing the battery. Also, make sure the battery is installed correctly. If you have a brand new grill, make sure that you removed the protective plastic from the battery.
If you don't hear a clicking sound, all the cables must be checked. To do this, first you have to remove the ignition module. Then you can see if all the cables are connected correctly to the ignition module – or if they are broken and must be replaced.
Check for food debris and blockage
Food remnants and debris can obstruct the igniter from sparking, which could lead to a clicking noise without ignition. Ensure that the area around the igniter is clean and dry before trying again. Our guide on cleaning the gas hob can be found here.
