Yes, French cafe curtains are having a moment, but we expect this trend will last longer than a moment – throughout the summer – and beyond.
Cafe, or tier, curtains are designed to hang from the middle of the window to the bottom of the window sill. They provide privacy while letting in light through the top portion of the window. Like most other curtains and drapes, cafe curtains are typically installed with two panels per window.
Among the main curtain trends for 2021 is an ambiance that's airy or light. Heavy and thick curtains can make a room look and feel much smaller. Homeowners might not realise that some guests may even feel claustrophobic in a room treated with bulky curtains, especially if the room isn't large to begin with!
Valance. If you want the light of a cafe window, but don't love the look, try just a valance instead. It's a nice way to bring in color and texture where privacy isn't a concern.
Both blinds and curtains are acceptable window treatments in kitchens and beyond. However, you may consider a more optimal choice to have blinds versus curtains in the kitchen. Kitchens are places with exposure to food spills, moisture, and also where privacy and lighting may be concerns.
The Main Interior Trends 2021 for Curtains
Various ruffles and frills are no longer trendy. Such options are appropriate only if you have chosen a design for the bedroom or the living room in the style of some period era like Victorian times.
In 2022, simplicity and minimalism are emerging in curtain and drapery styles. Less fluff and more flow are the way to go when choosing new curtains for your home. Classic materials like cotton and linen are top of the trend list to match the light, relaxing, naturalist themes this year.
In the Living Room
The windows behind the sofa are a great location for cafe curtains, too, as seen here in a room from designer Sara Gilbane. They're low maintenance; no need to open them in the morning for light or close them in the evening for privacy.
MEASURE WIDTH
The curtain should measure 1 ½ to double the width of the window for fullness.
If there is no window sill, then cafe curtains can hang around fifteen centimeters (six inches) below the window. If there is a window sill present, then cafe curtains should hang just above the sill. It is suggested that cafe style curtains hang above the sill by about one centimeter (three-eighths of an inch).
Window Treatment Styles And Designs That Are Out in 2021
Speaking of shutters, gray and gray-tone wood grain is rising in popularity for shutters, with all-white and dark wood shutter stains declining in popularity.
Hanging curtains over blinds adds extra depth and elegance to your windows, as blinds alone can look cold or unfinished. Sometimes hanging curtains on their own is sufficient, but occasionally you need to add extra privacy or light control.
Cafe curtains for dining rooms
Hang cafe curtains to cover the bottom half of windows in a breakfast nook or casual dining space.
Although cafe curtains are much shorter than regular curtains, they can still make a statement in your bedroom. Choose bold patterns or bright colors, or hang an additional valance like pictured below. Take a look at other bedroom curtain ideas for inspiration.
In February 2018, The Vermont Country Store purchased Country Curtains' designs.
Sheer or lightweight curtains on sash rods allow light to pass through windows on doors while providing some privacy. Sash rods are slender curtain rods that are used in pairs, one at the top and one at the bottom with the curtain fabric taut between them.
Natural Fabrics and Materials Add Texture
From rattan and wicker furniture, easy to care for dried arrangements (no watering needed!), to bamboo, reeds, and jute woven into stylish window shades, natural fibers and material will be popular in homes throughout 2022.
Zebra Shades are a very modern alternative to a horizontal blind. Zebra Shades are Roller shades that allow you to transition between sheer and privacy. The blinds can be adjusted so that the 3" zebra stripes line up-offering privacy, light control, and insulation.
Short Curtains
Visually speaking, high-water style is not the most appealing way to hang curtains. The shorter length can appear dated. Also, it can cut the visual height of your room in half. From a purely practical standpoint, however, short curtains are sometimes the best option.
Today, shutters are used extensively all over the world, for functional and aesthetic purposes. Do all houses need shutters? Absolutely not, and many, many houses would look much better without shutters, rather than with “today's” shutters.
