Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate is naturally alkaline, with a pH of 8. When you add baking soda to your pool water, you will raise both the pH and the alkalinity, improving stability and clarity. Many commercial pool products for raising alkalinity utilize baking soda as their main active ingredient.

As a rule of thumb, use 1.5 pounds (680 grams) of baking soda per 10,000 gallons (37,854 liters) of pool water. This should raise the alkalinity by about 10ppm (parts per million). Or you can use the chart below. If you're not sure how much water your pool holds, check out our pool calculator.
To eliminate any contaminants or chloramines in your cloudy pool water, add a high dose of chlorine by shocking your pool. If the cloudy water in your pool is due to a pool algae bloom, you'll have to double or triple shock depending on the type of algae you have.
Sodium bicarbonate is packaged in powder form and can be sprinkled directly into your pool water. Spread in wide arcs across the pool's surface to avoid dumping it all in one spot. Beware of adding baking soda on a windy day, as the powder can go airborne. Wait at least six hours.

White Vinegar
It's calcium buildup, and while it doesn't damage your pool or the water, it doesn't look great, either. Just like you run vinegar through your coffee pot to get rid of calcium buildup, white vinegar can wipe away this eyesore in your pool.
Having too much chlorine in your swimming pool water can cause it to become cloudy. Having too many chemicals in your water can throw off the delicate pH balance. Using too much of any pool chemical can cause cloudy water. High pH, high chlorine, and high alkalinity are all possible culprits.
However, adding too much baking soda might also raise the PH level of your pool to an undesired stage (alkaline). In the case where too much baking soda is added to hard water, it can cause a build-up of calcium around your pool.
When added to chlorinated water, baking soda increases the pH level so other chemicals can react faster. So, directly, it doesn't reduce bromine or chlorine levels in a hot tub, but it helps other chemicals neutralize it.
In almost all cases of cloudy swimming pool water the issue can be traced back to chlorine. This is good news because it's an easy fix. A simple shock treatment will often restore your pool to the sparkling clear haven it once was.
A 35% concentration of food grade hydrogen peroxide is most commonly used in swimming pools and spas. Some users prefer a 50% concentration.
Use Pool Flocculant (Floc)
A chemical known as flocculant, or floc, is a good idea if you're in a rush, or would like to see your swimming pool water cleared quickly. Again, flocculant should be avoided if you are using a cartridge filter as it will clog the paper pleats.

How long does it take for a cloudy pool to clear? It all depends on the cause and severity of the cloudiness. In general, it can take up to three days for chemicals to balance, or less if you use a pool clarifier. Keep testing, run the pump and adjust the chemical balance until your water is crystal clear again.
Can baking soda replace chlorine in a swimming pool? Nope. Baking soda is a very similar composition to what is known as soda ash. Soda ash is used to raise pH in a swimming pool.
Borax is tremendously effective at stabilizing alkalinity and acting as a pH buffer in swimming pools. Traditionally, pool owners have relied on baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and soda ash (sodium carbonate) to maintain their pools' pH levels; however, these chemicals have adverse effects.
Baking soda and water is exothermic and so the water gets a little warmer. This is because the binding energy of the chemical bonds of the products has an excess over the binding energy of the components. Therefore, energy is released and the water warms up.
Barley straw is a natural way to fight algae. On contact with water, the straw starts to break down, and as it does so it releases peroxides into the water which combat algae. Available in mini bales, or as a concentrated extract of barley straw liquid, it's a natural way of chemically fighting algae.
