Combining vinegar, water and baking soda is ideal for targeting the toughest algae stains and mould growth. In a large container, add two parts white vinegar to one part water and stir in three heaped teaspoons of baking soda.
Black Algae
Grab a brush and some baking soda. Bicarbonate, the active ingredient in baking soda, is an effective spot treatment to help kill the algae and loosen it from the wall. Make sure you really get every last particle free; black algae has particularly long and stubborn roots which makes it a persistent strand.
A rule of thumb is 1.5 lbs. of baking soda per 10,000 gallons of water will raise alkalinity by about 10 ppm. If your pool's pH tested below 7.2, add 3-4 pounds of baking soda. If you're new to adding pool chemicals, start by adding only one-half or three-fourths of the recommended amount.
Bleach is great for killing algae (and other organisms that may lurk in your tanks) and for keeping it from coming back.
Barley straw. Barley straw is a natural way to fight algae. On contact with water, the straw starts to break down, and as it does so it releases peroxides into the water which combat algae. Available in mini bales, or as a concentrated extract of barley straw liquid, it's a natural way of chemically fighting algae.
Shock Your Pool
Shocking is the process of adding chemicals to your pool to raise chlorine levels and kill bacteria and algae. We recommend using a calcium hypochlorite shock to treat your algae problems.
This is most effective for algae like Staghorn. Every time i have used the H2O2 to kill Staghorn algae, i've had a 100% success rate. It also makes a difference for algae like fuzz, spirogyra, brown hair algae and other hair algae types.
Your Best Weapon Against Algae
Chlorine—yep, your typical sanitizer—is much more effective at killing algae than algaecide is. Even if your water gets cloudy and your walls get slimy, chlorine can still kill it. That's because chlorine oxidizes bacteria and single-celled algae, which means they trade electrons.
Wait for the soda to dissolve
You will need to wait 6 hours to let the baking soda thoroughly dissolve into the pool water.
Hardware stores and home centers sell products designed to kill moss and algae, but you can save money by using inexpensive chlorine bleach or a non-creamy hand dishwashing detergent, such as Dawn.
TIP 5: USE BLEACH OR VINEGAR
Oxidized bleach immediately starts to kill algae cells once it comes into contact with it. Bleach, however, should not be your first option, especially if the area you plan to rid of algae is near plants or grass.
“Adding too much baking soda to a pool will cause the alkalinity to rise,” Vernon says. Anything above 120 ppm is too high. And over-alkaline water, he says, “can create scale build-up and cloudy water.” So as you add baking soda to adjust pH and alkalinity, remember to be patient.
Bleach solution
All you need to eliminate the algae is bleach and water. While you can try using water alone, you will need to wash the siding more frequently to eliminate the algae and stave off new growth.
Use White Vinegar to Remove Algae
If you have an algae problem, your best friend is white vinegar. White vinegar can quickly kill algae but is not harmful to birds, insects and the majority of plants. Use a mixture of one part water to one part white vinegar to spray down the area and kill the algae.
Use a pool brush to vigorously scrub any pool surfaces covered in algae, including the walls, floors and steps. Apply a green algaecide according to the directions on the label. Let the water circulate for 24 hours, then brush the pool surfaces again. Vacuum or backwash to remove any remaining dead algae.
You can use a bleach and water solution made with Clorox® Disinfecting Bleach for cleaning algae and mold from exterior sealed non-porous surfaces like stucco and painted wood, siding, tile, brick and patio stone. In some cases, bleach and water are all that's needed to clean away mold and algae.
Baking Soda
This is probably the easiest and least expensive way to clean your pool naturally. Bonus Tip: Baking soda will also increase your pool's alkalinity, and is far less expensive than most alkalinity increasers.
It is advised to add the hydrogen peroxide, then let the pump run 6 hours before swimming so it's fully incorporated and the percentage is at a safe swimming level.
In the case of blue-green algae: Use 1.5 to a maximum of 2.5 ml of the 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water. In the case of green algae: 20.25 ml to a maximum of 32.5 ml of the 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide per 13 gallons of water.
Eventually, the algae dies too. Bacteria digest the dead plants, using up remaining oxygen, and giving off carbon dioxide. If they can't swim away, fish and other wildlife become unhealthy, or die without oxygen.
