One of the most common issues that can lead to low water pressure problems is that the water is being obstructed by one or more partially closed shutoff valves. Typically, a home will have one main shutoff valve located inside the house.
The short answer is low water pressure in your home arises due to a number of causes. Some include a shut or blocked water meter valve, mineral buildup clogs pipes, corroded pipes, or even a crack in the main city supply pipe to your home.
The solution is to install a pressure balance valve. This won't stop the pressure from fluctuating but it WILL keep the balance between hot and cold water steady and avoiding those unpleasant temperature changes. Secondly, you should have your water company or plumber check the water pressure at the main.
A quick and easy way to increase water pressure is to adjust the pressure-reducing valve, which can be found in your home, usually close to your water meter.
If the low water pressure seems restricted to a single faucet or showerhead, the problem isn't with your pipes or water supply, but with the fixture itself. If it's a sink, the most common causes are a clogged aerator or clogged cartridge.
Check for a pressure-reducing valve (PRV) mounted on your water main. Most come set from the factory for 50 psi, but you can adjust them up or down by turning a screw on top. PRVs can also go bad after 10 to 20 years. So if yours is old, it might be time to replace it.
Typically, this shouldn't cause an issue because homes have a pressure switch. This valve helps to keep pressure constant throughout the home matching the supply of the water pressure to the demand. If this valve goes bad it can cause water pressure to fluctuate if more than one fixture is using water.
The most common cause of poor water pressure in the home is blockage somewhere in your sewer line. If your home's septic system includes a private septic tank, call a plumbing specialist to inspect your home's tank to see if the unit needs to be drained.
If there's an accumulation of sediments in your hot water tank, it can lower your water pressure. The presence of kinks in the flexible water pipes used in water heaters can result in low water pressure. If the shut-off valve isn't fully open, water pressure can drop.
These air bubbles usually find their way to the highest points in your plumbing system, lower water pressure, and inhibit the flow of water through the pipes. Air in the water piping system can cause rust and corrosion. Rusted pipes weaken, and the rust can drop sediment into your water.
Some of the first signs of a failing pressure regulator are a leaking water heater or commode. The water coming from a faucet may also exit with such force that splashing or water “hammering” may occur.
Normal psi for a home pipe system is between 30 and 80 psi. While you don't want the psi to be too low, it violates code to be above 80. Instead, you should aim for a psi that's between 60 and 70.
Pressure loss can be a serious threat to public health. A reduction or loss of pressure in the distribution system can result in backflow, allowing contaminants to enter drinking water through unprotected cross-connections.
Typically, water pressure regulators cost about $50 to $100 on average1, though you could end up paying up to $2001 depending on the size of incoming water line.

Reasons for Low Water Pressure Only in the Kitchen Sink
Thankfully, there are usually only a few things to blame for low water pressure in the kitchen sink: Clogged aerator. Blocked or broken cartridge. Impaired water lines.
A Clogged Cartridge
This device has an important job — when you lift or turn the faucet handle, the cartridge is responsible for opening valves and letting the water flow into your sink. If there's a problem with the cartridge — such as a blockage — you're likely to encounter low water pressure.
Begin the flushing procedure by opening the hot water taps in your bathroom(s). Open ALL hot water lavatory (sink) fixtures, hot water bath fixtures, and any other hot water fixtures, such as kitchens, wet bars, etc. Run these hot water fixtures for at least 15 minutes. Shut water off after 15 minutes.
A booster pump boosts water pressure and, in many cases, improves the flow rate. A booster pump works just like a fan. A fan has blades that spin around to increase air movement, and a booster pump has an impeller inside that increases water flow and pressure in the same fashion.
Find the spigot closest to your source of water. Make sure all the taps and other water uses are turned off in your house. Now turn on the spigot and see how long it takes to fill the bucket. Dividing the number 60 by the time to fill the bucket will give you the gallons per minute number.
Water Pressure Readings
Normal water pressure is generally between 40 and 60 PSI. Most homeowners prefer something right in the middle around 50 PSI. Once you measure the water pressure in your house, you can adjust it to a setting that is ideal for all family members and household uses.
