Your SimpliSafe lock most likely isn't responding to the Keypad because of low batteries, a communication issue with the Base Station, or an internal device jam.
When your keypad door lock stops working, the quickest fix is usually replacing the batteries or performing a system reset. Follow this step-by-step checklist to troubleshoot and fix the issue.
Power Cycle the Smart Lock
Remove one battery for 30 seconds, then reinstall it into the lock. Once the lock has been reset by power cycling it, recalibrate it by using the SimpliSafe® Mobile App or the Keypad.
The Smart Lock cannot communicate with the Base Station. The batteries in your Smart Lock need to be replaced. The Smart Lock is jammed and needs to be recalibrated. Its firmware needs to be updated.
SimpliSafe sensors won't work correctly if the battery is too low, they're still in the box from your order, or the device is too far from the base station. Just like SimpliSafe's sensors, the keypad won't work if it's too far from or isn't paired with the base station.
If your SimpliSafe keypad is unresponsive, power-cycling the device by removing the 4 AA batteries for 3–5 minutes or cleaning the battery terminals for corrosion usually resolves the issue. If it is displaying an "Out of Range" error, make sure the keypad is within 3–5 feet of the base station to test the connection.
The Keypad takes four (4) AA batteries and they are expected to last 8-12 months, depending on your usage and placement.
To fix an unresponsive SimpliSafe door lock or PIN pad, first replace the four AA batteries in the interior lock assembly. Next, perform a hard reset on the lock by holding the pairing button above the batteries for 10-20 seconds, and then pair the PIN pad again via the Base Station.
Electronic door locks typically last between 5 to 8 years. However, the lifespan depends heavily on the type of lock, build quality, and maintenance.
If this happens frequently, it may be time to replace the lock. On the other hand, the key might be too worn, or the cylinder may need oiling. You can also try re-keying the lock to make it smoother and easier to open. There's no turning mechanism, or the knob won't turn properly.
To hard reset a SimpliSafe keypad, slide the unit up off its wall bracket, remove the four AA batteries, and wait 3-5 minutes for it to fully lose power. Press any button to drain residual energy, reinsert the batteries, and place it back on the mount.
Your SimpliSafe Master PIN is the primary 4-digit code used to arm and disarm your system, lock/unlock your smart lock, and access the Keypad's menu. You can easily change or recover your Master PIN through the SimpliSafe mobile app.
SimpliSafe is currently operational with no widespread outages reported. Your physical security system and professional monitoring will continue to function normally during any temporary app or server fluctuations.
When a keypad or keyboard suddenly stops working, it is often due to a temporary software glitch, driver issue, or battery failure (for wireless). Immediate fixes include restarting the computer, changing batteries, unplugging/replugging the device, or cleaning debris from under the keys.
Safe Mode won't fix the problem permanently, but it will help you determine whether your keyboard has a hardware fault or software problem.
Troubleshooting a smart lock usually comes down to three main culprits: low power, physical misalignment, or connection issues. Start by replacing the batteries with brand new, high-quality ones, and manually operate the deadbolt to ensure the door and frame are properly aligned.
If a digital lock battery dies, the lock becomes inoperable via keypad, fingerprint, or app, but it remains secure and locked. You will not be locked out permanently, as most locks feature emergency power options (like a 9V battery terminal) or a manual key override. Access codes are retained in memory.
Fixing a keyless entry lock usually comes down to resolving power loss, mechanical friction, or connectivity glitches. Follow this quick diagnostic guide to get your lock working again.
Fixing a keypad door lock is usually quick. Start by replacing the batteries, inspecting for physical jams, and resetting the system.
The Smart Lock is powered by 4 Duracell AA Alkaline batteries, and the PIN Pad takes 2 Duracell CR2450 Lithium batteries. The batteries within the Smart Lock and PIN Pad have a life expectancy of 8-12 months, depending on usage.
A SimpliSafe entry sensor that says "not responding" usually means it has lost communication with the base station. The most common fixes are replacing the CR2032 battery, temporarily rebooting the base station, or removing and re-adding the sensor in the SimpliSafe app.
Power loss from dead batteries is the most frequent problem. Environmental factors like dirt buildup can also obstruct button contact. Finally, signal or programming errors, from a wrong PIN entry to internal connectivity problems like frayed wires, can cause your keypad to malfunction.
A lithium battery can sit unused for about 2 to 3 years before it permanently degrades, but it needs to be recharged every 3 to 6 months during storage to prevent it from going into a damaging deep discharge.
Neither system is universally "better," as the right choice depends on your specific needs. Ring is the better choice for smart home integration, camera variety, and budget-friendly self-monitoring. SimpliSafe is better if you prioritize a dedicated, traditional security system with professional monitoring and excellent customer support.
