You can try putting peanut butter or bird seed with the bait ( more bait than attractant ) but sometimes rats can have very particular tastes. I've been in rodent jobs where I've changed attractants 4 -5 times before the rats decided they liked it.
You need a fresh set because you have a higher probability that it might have expired. It's also possible that various factors, such as the storage conditions, might have reduced its effectiveness. Once the rat has habituated to the box and is actively taking the food, install only one food piece directly to the trap trigger and set the trap.

We would suggest laying around 400gms in 4 different locations (100gms each location) and checking daily for the “take”. If all of one bait station has been eaten then place 200gms at this point.

The time taken for a rodent to die after eating the bait varies from 2 to 12 days. A rodent eating a sub-lethal dose (not enough to kill it) may carry the poison in its liver for several months. Before a poisoned rodent dies it may be caught by a Barn Owl which then ingests the poison.

If you can face it, smear the dead rat around the inside of the trap box, or leave the dead animal nearby. Rats are attracted by other dead rats.

Rats will not leave on their own unless they are forced to do so by humans. If you give them a chance to leave on their own they will eventually die from lack of food or water or because of disease or other circumstances that could kill them off quickly before you get rid of them completely.
