Lettuce grown in aeroponic systems typically matures up to three times faster than its soil-grown counterparts. The constant and direct exposure to water and nutrients, along with ideal oxygen levels at the roots, accelerates growth, enabling faster and more frequent harvests.
Lettuce hydroponics is an excellent choice for your hydroponic greenhouse. They're easy to grow, thrive in hydroponic conditions, are versatile in their use, and offer incredible nutritional bonuses.
Lettuce thrives when the water temperature is between 70 and 74°F (21-23°C), this is also a good temperature for many fish, which is why lettuce is a good match for most aquaponics systems. Airflow in the grow room is also important to increase transpiration and the uptake of nutrients.
Since lettuce plants have shallow root systems, they don't interfere with root vegetables in the soil, and you can pack a lot of plants into a small area by growing these plant types together. Best of all, root crops and lettuce grow well in spring and autumn gardens when many other vegetables are less productive.

Water Lettuce is a natural biofilter, gobbling up nitrates, nitrites, and phosphate like a hungry diner at an all-you-can-eat buffet. It's not just about sucking up the bad stuff; it's a champion at oxygenating the water, giving your pond life a breath of fresh air.
Two of the most popular greens for our fish seem to be romaine lettuce, zucchini and other squash. I also feed melon rinds (cantaloupe seems to be the most popular) and an occasional sweet potato.
In traditional gardens, most lettuces grow in approximately 30 days, and the hardier and head varieties of lettuces grow in 45 to 60 days. However, in aquaponics systems, lettuces may grow two to three times faster because of their access to nutrient-rich water 24 hours a day.
Just like turnips, it is also not advisable to grow most root and tuber crops such as carrot, garlic, ginger, onion, and potato on the aeroponic towers. Aeroponic towers are originallydesigned for soilless growing and they may not provide the ideal environment for these crops.
The biggest advantage of aeroponics is that roots are exposed to air, thus there is never an issue of insufficient oxygen. 4 weeks growth of lettuce on an aeroponic tower. These lettuces were grown outdoors in the summer with temperatures reaching 35°C (95 °F) in the shade. It's all matter of choosing the right varieties of lettuce that can handle the heat such as Batavia and Summer Crisp varieties.

I removed the lower leaves so that the plant would concentrate it's energy on regrowing, not dealing with the leaves left behind. You'll be able to get away with 2-3 harvests per plant, after which they will most likely become too bitter or tough.
Despite the conflicting literature, Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, human noroviruses, and Listeria monocytogenes have been identified in hydroponically grown produce (Lopez-Galvez et al., 2014) and therefore, good practices should be promoted to ensure the quality of water used in the system.
Water lettuce is great for cleaning pond water of decomposition byproducts and is often used to keep the water healthy for fish and aquatic life. This plant also reduces algae blooms by blocking sunlight in the water and using the nutrients needed for the algae to bloom.
Poor water can lead to a yellow-leaf epidemic in your aquatic garden. Ensure the water is free of harmful chemicals and has the right pH. Remember, Water Lettuce roots are as picky as a gourmet chef about their aquatic environment.
Fish emulsion is especially effective on vegetables such as leafy greens. It also works well on cucumbers and certain succulents. Can fish emulsion fertilizer be organic? Fish emulsion, by nature, is an organic method of feeding your plants.
Water-lettuce mats can lower dissolved oxygen concentrations reducing aquatic life. Dense populations may lower water levels because water-lettuce increases evaporation rates over open water areas.
ICEBERG LETTUCE: 96% water
The bedrock of most salads, lettuce, in all its varieties, is made up mostly of water. Iceberg is the water-logged champ at 96%, but romaine at 94%, spinach at 91%, and kale at 90% are serious contenders, too.
The Test Kitchen reported the lettuce leaves getting a little softer, but the whole head in the water is still nice and crisp. Our Test Kitchen points out that storing leaves versus the whole head of lettuce is preferred, as it takes up less fridge space, even though the whole head stayed crisper when stored intact.
