Selvage is correct as to why they are more costly. The Everydrop filter does much more than the cheaper filters, reducing many contaminants that the others let through. (And the published data on Amazon and elsewhere from honest less expensive brands will not deny that fact.)
If you prefer a filter, do not use generics. Over time, they will damage the filter adapter with which the filter mates. That is what causes a no ice/no water issue. I know the Samsungs are twice as much, but they won't damage that filter adapter.
Customers say the EveryDrop Ice and Water Refrigerator Filter is easy to install and effectively improves the taste and clarity of water and ice. However, many users find the price to be high, especially given that the filter typically needs replacement every 3 to 6 months.

Cost. In the case of price, the XWFE water filters are slightly more expensive. That is because of the filter's advanced features and compatibility with newer refrigerators.
XWF and XWFE Compatibility
The XWFE filter is backwards compatible. It can be used in refrigerators that use an XWF filter. The XWF is not forward compatible with newer models of refrigerators using the XWFE because they are designed to have the filter interact with the control panel.
Some generic filters may not filter water as effectively as brand-name ones, leading to possible differences in water quality and taste. Additionally, certain generic filters might have a shorter lifespan, necessitating more frequent replacements.
Once the filter has been replaced, it is important to flush the water system. This process removes excess air, prepares the filter for use, and removes excess carbon. The air in the water system may cause dripping at the dispenser, small/hollow ice cubes, or a cloudy appearance in the water quality.
A: Hello JCL, this does not remove fluoride. We hope this helps.
The HDX label on the side says it is rated for 300 gallons whereas the Everydrop filter is rated for 100-200 gallons. Both filters have the same NSF/ANSI certifications (42,53,401). The HDX has a working pressure range 20-100PSI. The Everydrop just lists the max pressure at 120PSI.
A: While I agree that the EveryDrop filters are priced too high (and unfortunately they keep going up), the first answer from D. Selvage is correct as to why they are more costly. The Everydrop filter does much more than the cheaper filters, reducing many contaminants that the others let through.
For clean, fresh tasting water, Whirlpool recommends replacing your water filter every 6 months. It may need to be changed more frequently depending on your usage and water quality.
Genuine (OEM) vs.
An aftermarket product is a generic product made by a third-party manufacturer, designed to replace the factory original. An aftermarket fridge filter typically costs less than a Genuine OEM filter.
Carbon water filters aren't the only type of filter you can use in your refrigerator. One option is a reverse osmosis filter, which filters out everything from giardia to E. coli through a semipermeable membrane with pores as small as 0.0001 microns.
Counterfeit water filters often feel lighter than their legitimate equivalents and will typically not filter nearly as well. Lack of certification: Real water filters should have certification symbols from agencies like the NSF International or WQA Gold Seal, ensuring the filter meets certain standards.
†everydrop® products and the recommended brand's products are owned and distributed by Whirlpool Corporation. Replacing your refrigerator's water filter every six months is not just a suggestion, it's a necessity.
A: This is NOT NSF approved to filter PFOA/PFAS. It is not listed under the NSF listing for protocol 53 as something that Everydrop has certification for.
At everydrop, we use carbon filters made from excess coconut shells to bring you clean water filtered by this non-toxic, edible source found right in nature.
Counterfeit filters don't contain enough - if any - of the filtering materials necessary to keep them out of your water. Beyond the risk to your water, counterfeit filters can do serious damage to your appliance.
Depending on your refrigerator type, everydrop® water filters reduce up to 73 contaminants3, including lead, chlorine, pesticides and pharmaceuticals.
Flushing a new water filter is necessary to eliminate any initial carbon dust and particles. These impurities can accumulate during the production and packaging of the filter. If not flushed out, they can mix with your drinking water, affecting its quality and taste.
Cheap air filters don't last as long, are less efficient at trapping particles, and have a smaller surface area to filter. This can lead to poor indoor air quality and increased health risks.
Understanding the different types of water filtration systems is key to choosing the right one for your home. Countertop filters offer convenience and affordability, under sink water filters provide advanced filtration with minimal intrusion, and reverse osmosis systems deliver unparalleled contaminant removal.
