Flapper Chain Misalignment: If the flapper chain has too much slack or is too tight, it can cause it to remain open for too long. We recommend only having 1-2 chain links in slack.
Condition: Check the flapper for signs of wear, warping, or damage. If it's cracked or hardened, it may not create a proper seal. Cleaning: Sometimes, mineral deposits or debris can prevent a good seal. Clean the flapper and the area around it to ensure there is no obstruction.
The reason the flush valve/flapper is getting stuck up is it's binding against the float rod. Either bend the float rod a little bit to give it some clearance or rotate the fill valve slightly to move the rod towards the back of the tank.
Using a medium sized float you can adjust the closing rate of the flapper by positioning it's location on the flapper chain. The higher up the quicker the flapper closes / the lower on the chain the longer the flapper stays open. Also make sure that there is not to much extra slack on the flapper chain.
Toilet flappers usually last for about 3 to 5 years, but the lifespan can vary depending on factors such as the quality of the flapper, the water quality, and the frequency of use.
If the flapper is less than 5 years old, check the rubber surface for debris. Wipe slime and/or debris from the underside and flush valve seat with a clean cloth. Cut excess chain if it is interfering with the seating of the flapper. Makes sure the chain is not too straight.
Trim the Chain
If the excess chain hangs too far, it can fall between the toilet flapper and the toilet valve. Thus, it creates an opening, never allowing the flapper to seal the valve fully. The fix is to use a wire cutter or side-cutting pliers to trim off the excess chain.

If you've replaced the flapper and adjusted the float ball, but the toilet continues to run, the most likely cause is a leaking flush valve. Usually, such a leak is around the mouth of the flush valve where the flapper is supposed to make a good seal.
The flapper, over time, can become loose or damaged, and it will need to be replaced. The total average cost of this repair is also between $70 and $200.
But there's hope for our poor little flapper in the form of Vaseline, which can partially restore its youth and suppleness. Drain the toilet tank. Dry off the toilet flapper. Rub Vaseline on the flapper and its connecting washer until they soften.
Sign 1: Constantly Running Toilet
The flush valve acts as a gatekeeper, controlling the water flow from the tank to the toilet bowl when you flush. However, if the valve is faulty, it can cause the toilet to keep running, as it's unable to properly close and stop the water flow.
Worn Out or Warped Flapper: Over time, the rubber material of the flapper can deteriorate, become brittle, or warp. This wear and tear can prevent the flapper from creating a proper seal, allowing water to leak continuously into the bowl.
If you have to flush the toilet twice, there most likely isn't enough water flowing into the bowl. This means the siphoning effect is too weak to clear everything out of the toilet in one go.
Moving a float (a float is placed on the flapper chain) up the chain, so you are setting the flapper to close faster. By lowering the float on the chain you are causing the flapper to stay open longer.
To check for a leaky flapper, take the lid off your toilet tank and flush the toilet. Watch the toilet flapper while the toilet flushes. A leaky flapper doesn't reseal properly after the toilet has been flushed. If your flapper is worn, broken or damaged, replacing the unit should help your toilet function normally.
Check your water levels
Low water levels in your tank are common causes of toilets filling up with water when flushed. They can also cause slow-draining toilets. You can manually top up your tank with water to help the flush. Then, check the flush tube for cracks and bends that lead to leaks.
There are four main types of toilet tank flappers: rubber, silicone, standard or universal, and adjustable.
Make sure that the flapper inside of your tank isn't worn out. When flappers are old, they can get stuck. Check to see if it's hard to pull. If so, just replace your toilet flapper.
Check the Flapper
Flush the toilet and watch the flapper. It should lift completely off the valve seat, allowing water to rush out. At the end of the flush cycle, it should sit squarely on the opening and block all water flow. If water leaks through, continue the toilet flapper troubleshooting process.
