Pool algae can be caused by poor filtration, out-of-balance water, low or inconsistent chlorine levels, or poor water circulation. Green, dark green, yellowish green and blue-green algae are the most common. Green algae are slimy.

While prevention is the best cure for an algae problem, eliminating an algae bloom is usually straightforward. In addition to your regular pool cleaner products, you'll need pool shock, flocculant or clarifier, an abrasive brush that won't damage your pool's surface, and a pool vacuum or skimmer.
