Humidity can make your laminate floor boards shrink or expand a bit. This fluctuation in humidity levels can cause them to click loose and move, resulting in openings between the boards. Fortunately, you don't have to remove the entire floor to close these open joints.
Add a bead of construction adhesive to the gap first, and then slide the transition strip in place. This will do a lot to prevent the floating floors from moving.
If your laminate boards are separating, it's possible that the edges simply didn't engage properly when the flooring was laid. However, it's worth noting that sometimes your boards may have separated because the locking mechanism is faulty or broken.
Multiple factors can cause planks to separate. Humidity levels or physical shifting due to high foot traffic can cause unsightly gaps between the ends of planks. This is more typically an issue with click-lock floors than with adhesive installations. Fortunately, this also is one of the easiest problems to fix.
Temperature and humidity will change in all rooms. This result is the laminate flooring will expanding and contract as the temperature and humidity change. It's the same with solid and engineered wood floors. Without an expansion gap 'buckling' is a common problem.
At the very minimum, your new laminate flooring should last eight years. However, most laminate can last well over a decade, especially if you take good care of it and keep it protected. The lifespan of your laminate floors may also depend on how much foot traffic is in a particular room.
Hardwood floors inevitably form gaps due to how wood moves. During hot days, moisture content inside the wood is lost, causing the wood to shrink. Water-logged wood can swell, applying pressure against planks so they chip and break. It is okay if there are small gaps between your planks.
Because the flooring isn't attached to the sub-floor, it can move slightly when walking over it. However this is often tiny movements, caused by the underlay compressing underfoot. A hollow or echoed sound can sometimes occur when walking over a floating floor.
Buckling occurs when laminate flooring does not have enough space to contract and expand with temperature changes. Since it is a floating floor, the planks tend to contract when it is cool and expand when it is warm. Therefore it is crucial to take precautions to prevent buckling.
If the laminate isn't acclimated to the internal temperature and humidity before being laid, it may shrink or grow once laid, causing lifting.
What are the problems with floating floors? Floating floors can be susceptible to moisture and humidity, which can cause warping or buckling. They also tend to be more prone to gaps between planks due to their lack of attachment.
The quickest way to get new wood underfoot is to install a floating floor. Unlike traditional solid-wood strips, a floating floor isn't nailed down. Instead, the planks are either glued or snapped together. The planks go down fast, over virtually any material—concrete, plywood, sheet vinyl, even ceramic tile.

Expansion and contraction is a fact of life
When installing floating vinyl floors it is necessary to allow for this expansion by leaving a gap around the perimeter of the floor or anywhere it meets another floor or vertical surface.
Your vinyl planks will be placed parallel to the focal wall or the longest wall in the room. Measure out the length and width of the room, and divide the width of the room by the width of the planks. Plan for ¼” gap along the walls to allow for expansion.
The idea is that you stick the floor gap fixer on the board that has a gap at the end and wack it with the mallet. This closes one gap and opens up another behind it. You then close that gap, and the next, and the next until you've hidden the gap behind the nearest baseboard.
These gaps are necessary to allow for the expansion and contraction of the flooring material as temperatures and humidity levels change. The size of the expansion gap required depends on the type of flooring material being used and the climate in the room.
A floating floor can have a slight bounce or give underfoot, but it should not feel excessively bouncy or unstable. A small amount of deflection is normal and can be caused by a number of factors, such as the type of subfloor, the thickness and quality of the underlayment, and the installation method.
Aside from discoloration in the flooring installation, damage from water can cause planks to become loose. Over time, warping and buckling is an issue as well, due to excess moisture.
