For home repair purposes, linseed is a popular ingredient. It doesn't only preserve wood but also prevents wood deterioration. However, linseed oil is a slow-drying liquid. Hence, it's necessary to mix linseed oil and turpentine to speed up the oil's drying time.
It doesn't matter, though. The most important thing here is that you apply a good amount of the mixture to the surface. Linseed oil penetrates the wood quickly. But to get the best results, you can dry it for 48 hours.
1. Mix 2:1 volume ratio of Boiled Linseed Oil to Recochem Pure Turpentine. 2. Make sure wood is completely free of old finish, wax or dust.
It was found that the addition of solvents such as mineral spirits, japan drier, and turpentine would speed linseed oil's drying time, making it a more useful product.
Step 1: Mix one part linseed stand oil with two parts turpentine (or odorless mineral spirits).
Mineral spirits, also called ''white spirits'' (trade names include Varnolene and Texaco spirits), is a petroleum distillate specifically manufactured as a substitute for turpentine. Most painters prefer it as a paint thinner because it costs less, is not so sticky and has a less offensive odor than turpentine.
Turpentine is technically a solvent, and one of the more traditional ones that painters use. It speeds up the drying time as it dilutes the paint and evaporates off of it (the equivalent of water for acrylic paint, if you like.)
Apply the first coat with a brush, roller or cloth. 10 to 15 minutes after application, completely wipe the surface to remove any excess oil. Failure to complete this step will leave you with a sticky surface. 2-3 coats, applied at 12 to 24 hours intervals are necessary for proper protection.
If you absolutely must have it dry faster than 20 minutes, add more turpentine to the oil, but be aware that thinning the oil also reduces its effectiveness.
For protecting concrete or stone from freeze/thaw cycles and from salt and chemical damage, mix equal parts of Boiled Linseed Oil with Paint Thinner, Mineral Spirits or Varsol* Paint Thinner.

Boiled Linseed Oil is a slow drying oil that penetrates deep in the wood and gives it a great finish. Over time Boiled Linseed Oil will strengthen the wood and give it a protection from water and other types of potential damage.
Raw linseed oil is the purest form, but is sometimes impractical as a furniture finish due to the extended drying times- it can take several weeks for each coat of raw linseed oil to cure. Boiled linseed oil is common as a wood finish, but contains some potentially hazardous drying compounds.
Oak is extremely porous, so the Boiled Linseed Oil soaks in deep and takes a long time to dry. If the exterior conditions are damp, this can increase the drying time further allowing mould to develop on the oil before it dries.
While you can use straight linseed oil on your wood furniture projects and you have to mix tung oil with a solvent for improved penetration, this is a small price to pay. Pure tung oil requires only application with a brush, roller, or rag with roughly 40 minutes of time between coats to allow the oil to absorb.
After about 20 minutes, wipe off the excess with a clean lint-free cloth. Failure to do so will prevent penetration of future coats and leave a sticky surface. Repeat the previous steps once or twice at 24 hour intervals. Apply a final coat of Boiled Linseed Oil, again wiping off any excess.
How Long Does Boiled Linseed Oil Take To Dry? It may take between 24-72 hours for boiled linseed oil to fully cure, or dry out to the touch.

When the surface is no longer tacky to touch you are ready to do a very lite sanding following the direction of the grain (operative word is lite as we don't want to cut through the very thin layer we just put down previously).
All oils yellow with time, some more than others, therefore the more oil you use the more pronounced the yellowing. Linseed is the most yellowing kind but even then there are differences depending on how it was prepared, raw linseed oil becomes brown while stand oil takes on a light gallery tone.
