When you flush the toilet, it opens a valve to allow more water in. Water hammer happens when the valve suddenly shuts off, resulting in water with no place to go. This incident causes the excess water to hit the walls of your pipes at high speed, resulting in a rattling or hammering sound.
In fact, it is not uncommon to hear flowing water as it travels through the plumbing system. This is especially true with older homes when it was common to leave drain pipes exposed, such as the ceiling of a basement or garage.
The most common cause of a vibrating sound in the walls when you flush is an issue with the toilet's fill valve – specifically, its diaphragm gasket. When this small part wears out, it becomes stiff and less flexible. When it tries to shut off, it bounces up and down, causing the vibrating sounds you hear.
Problems with the P-Trap
Problems with gurgling can arise if a sudden flow of water inside the pipe - such as when a toilet is flushed - creates a positive pressure that causes wastewater to back up in a drainage system. This can force water and air bubbles up the drain, resulting in that tell-tale gurgling sound.
When the toilet is flushed, the rush of water into the sewer is pulling air through the tub drain causing the gurgling noise. First, make sure the plumbing vents extend above the roof. Installing Pressure Regulating Devices
High water pressure is a frequent reason for water hammering. Your problem is probably caused by your pressure, which is close to 100 psi. 30 to 55 psi is considered normal pressure. Consider hiring a plumber to install a water pressure regulating device to address this issue.
Most banging pipes can be fixed or prevented by quickly assessing your plumbing, securing any loose pipes, and installing a hammer arrestor.
This can be fixed by draining your plumbing system, which requires turning off the main water valve and opening the highest faucet in your home. Then drain water from the lowest faucet. The chamber should fill up with air once the water is drained and resolve your water hammer problem.

Also called hydraulic shock, the signs of water hammer include a loud thumping or “hammering” noise from pipes carrying fluid and moderate- to heavy vibrations along the pipe system. Its impact can range from mild or undetectable vibrations to severe and very disruptive pressure shocks.
Enough force from water hammer can even cause pipes to burst. If you hear rattling sounds along with the water hammer, it likely means you have pipes coming loose.
Drain your pipes and refill them to create new air chambers
To do this, shut off your home's main water valve, then open the highest faucet in your home. Next, turn on the lowest faucet in your home and keep it on until all water has drained. Finally, reopen the main water valve to refill your pipes.
This problem can be resolved by installing a water hammer arrestor or a shock absorber. The water hammer arrestor is used to prevent a burst tank and pipes, vibrations and noise. The force of the water hammer is comparable to the force of an explosion.
Water arrestors by their design are an addition to the pipe. A little air chamber that extends perpendicular off each that is sealed off from water. When the water moves suddenly in the pipe that air chamber absorbs the shock. As they get used though, over time they wear out making them ineffective.
Usually, banging noises in the pipes come from a problem with water pressure or water flow. Two of the most common causes are water hammers and trapped air bubbles. A water hammer occurs when a faucet or valve is shut off suddenly.
