Banging Noises from the Furnace Room Simply reading the word “explosion” may cause a small panic, but it's actually a common problem that many homeowners experience. When the gas isn't ignited immediately, the gas starts to build up in the furnace until it finally reaches a flame and ignites. This causes a loud BOOM.
Most of the booms that people hear or experience are the result of human activity, such as an explosion, a large vehicle going by, nearby construction, or sometimes a sonic boom, but there have been many reports of booms that cannot be explained by man-made sources.
Exploding head syndrome is a benign, underdiagnosed sensory parasomnia characterized by the sensation of hearing a loud sound during sleep-wake/wake-sleep transitions.
Exploding head syndrome (EHS) is a sleep disorder that makes you hear explosions or other sudden, loud sounds in your sleep. It can be scary to experience, but EHS isn't painful and isn't a sign that something is wrong with your ears or brain.
Sleep paralysis is experienced equally in males and females. Lifetime prevalence rates derived from 35 aggregated studies indicate that approximately 8% of the general population, 28% of students, and 32% of psychiatric patients experience at least one episode of sleep paralysis at some point in their lives.
Scratching, rustling, or thumping sounds in the walls or attic can be due to the presence of insects or animals. If unaddressed, these issues can lead to more significant repair problems, such as damage to insulation, electrical wiring, and structural components of your home.
Popping Sounds
This is because a brief electrical arc is almost like a miniature explosion as the electric current jumps between connections almost instantaneously. You can hear this sound both at an outlet or at your home's main electrical panel.
Just not a ghost. If you have an unfinished attic, odds are those footsteps you hear come from some rowdy ducks, mice, a cat or even a wily raccoon. Maybe they are looking for food or – perhaps – to escape from becoming food.
Skyquake. A skyquake is a phenomenon where a loud sound is reported to originate from the sky. It often manifests as a banging, or a horn-like noise. The sound may cause noticeable vibration in the ceiling or across a particular room.
Tinnitus (pronounced tih-NITE-us or TIN-uh-tus) is the perception of sound that does not have an external source, so other people cannot hear it. Tinnitus is commonly described as a ringing sound, but some people hear other types of sounds, such as roaring or buzzing.
Sonic boom is an impulsive noise similar to thunder. It is caused by an object moving faster than sound -- about 750 miles per hour at sea level. An aircraft traveling through the atmosphere continuously produces air-pressure waves similar to the water waves caused by a ship's bow.
Heavy furniture, appliances, or even an attic filled with storage can cause the floor to sag and shake. If the weight is concentrated in one area, it can exacerbate the problem, leading to further vibrations.
Loose Supply Pipes
If you live in an older home, the hot and cold-water supply lines can become loose and bang against the straps that secure them in place. When this happens, the water pressure causes the pipes to move and tap against the wall or brackets. This can produce a knocking sound.
Do you notice creaking and cracking noises at night, when things are quiet? Most of the time, this is just the normal thermal expansion and contraction of your home's wooden structure and attic beams. It happens often when the air cools in the evening and the wood contracts.
When a circuit breaker trips, it makes a loud flipping sound. In the process, all the power in your house comes to a stop. Don't worry, it means the circuit breaker is doing its job.
Typically, a sharp crack or click will indicate that the lightning channel passed nearby. If the thunder sounds more like a rumble, the lightning was at least several miles away. The loud boom that you sometimes hear is created by the main lightning channel as it reaches the ground.
Power pop is a more aggressive form of pop rock that is based on catchy, melodic hooks and energetic moods. AllMusic describes the style as "a cross between the crunching hard rock of the Who and the sweet melodicism of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, with the ringing guitars of the Byrds thrown in for good measure".
Another common cause of cracking or popping sounds in the house is settling. In these cases, the weight of the house presses down on the soil beneath, causing small changes in the ground below the house that cause bits of the house's structure to shift slightly.
As many skyquakes seem to happen near large, deep lakes, one suggestion is that they come from gases released from lake sediments. However, some skyquakes happen away from bodies of water. Other suggestions include distant storms, earthquakes, or thunder cracking over the ocean.
To thud is to make the loud sound of something heavy hitting or falling. Tip your chair too far back and your body may thud against the floor.
Sleep paralysis is a temporary inability to move or speak when you're waking up or falling asleep. It's not harmful and should pass quickly, but can be frightening. It can affect anyone, but is most common in young adults. See your GP if you experience sleep paralysis regularly.
Somniphobia is the intense fear of sleep. People with this phobia may be afraid of having nightmares, experiencing sleep paralysis or dying in their sleep. Often, people who have somniphobia try to avoid going to sleep for as long as possible.
During this period, you may sense or even see a malevolent presence lurking nearby or hovering over you. You may also feel as if the presence is pressing down on your chest or somehow attacking you. That is a sleep paralysis demon. Understandably, the experience can be terrifying.
