Copper in the US is used mainly in construction (43%) and electric equipment (19%). In 2014, the nation produced 69% of the copper it used, relying on imports from Chile, Canada, Peru, and Mexico for the remaining 31%.
Within the United States, mining and production of copper are primarily located in the West, specifically Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and Montana. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), production in these states and Michigan account for more than 99% of domestic copper production.
Current copper resources are estimated to exceed 5,000 million tonnes (USGS, 2014 & 2017). According to USGS data, since 1950 there has always been, on average, 40 years of copper reserves and over 200 years of resources left.
The countries producing the world's copper
Chile is the top copper producer in the world, with 27% of global copper production. In addition, the country is home to the two largest mines in the world, Escondida and Collahuasi.
The Escondida mine in Chile is the world's largest copper mine based on capacity, at some 1.35 million metric tons. Escondida is owned by BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, and Japan Escondida.
Demand could double to 50 million metric tons by 2035, S&P Global forecast, with strongest demand from the US, China, Europe, and India. This would be no cause for concern – except S&P Global also predict that copper supply will be unable to keep up with demand from as early as 2025.

Building construction
The top use of copper is the construction sector. Nearly half of all copper supply makes its way into buildings, from homes to businesses. In fact, one home alone can contain on average 439 pounds of copper.

To meet the copper needs of electrifying the global vehicle fleet, as many as six new large copper mines must be brought online annually over the next several decades. About 40% of the production from new mines will be required for electric vehicle-related grid upgrades.
