Water damage signs include: Peeling, bubbling or flaking paint. Water rings, typically a light brown color. Musty smells.
If you see bubbling paint, mold growth or any other signs of water damage to your ceiling, then you must call experts right away. Prolonging repairs of wet ceilings is simply calling for trouble.
Water-damaged ceilings are high-priority issues that lead to rot, mold and a weaker house frame. Leaks must be fixed, and water-damaged ceilings repaired, as soon as possible.
The necessary period to dry out the ceiling will vary based on how wet the ceiling got. It can take a minimum of two weeks but sometimes up to four weeks. Ensure you address the leak's cause to ensure you are solving the problem rather than going in an endless circle.
A seemingly small water leak can cause just as much damage as a full-scale flood or burst pipes. If you get water in your ceiling, from a water leak for example you will need to take care. Not only do ceiling voids have things like electrical wiring and junction boxes in them, but if the amount of water is a lot, it can cause the ceiling to potentially collapse.
mildew and mold will develop within 24-48 hours of water exposure. Even worse, it will continue to grow until steps are taken to eliminate the source of moisture, and effectively deal with the mold problem. Use the diagram on the facing page to assess the extent of mold in your home.
Moisture trapped behind plasterboard can turn to mould, causing unpleasant smells or even pose a health hazard. If you find a leak early and stop the spread before significant damage is done, it may dry up on its own. But for larger leaks it's important that the ceiling is dried out fully using a dehumidifier or fan.
The 48-72 hour window is critical to prevent mold growth as it usually takes 24 to 48 hours for mold to germinate and grow. Once fungus gets a hold on a drywall surface, it can be the breeding ground for thousands of spores and quickly spread in the air around the wall with every passing hour.
You need to have the place where the water entered repaired. If it is not repaired or if the repair job is bad, then the water will continue to come in and you will need to paint that spot again, (and again, and again, every time it rains!) Until the leak is fixed you shouldn't try to paint over a water stain.
Most of the time you can safely paint over water stains on a ceiling or walls. But, you need to use the right paint to block the stain. And, you need to be sure that none of the water damage needs to be repaired before you can paint.
Watermarks or Brown “Rusty” Stains– Oftentimes one of the most common signs of ceiling or roof water damage is watermarks or brown “rusty” stains on the walls, ceilings and/or attic. It can be a sign of a previous or current leak, so you should always have them checked out if they appear within your home.

A water leakage above the ceiling causes mold. Usually, mold grows behind walls, but sometimes you see growing on the ceilings. To ensure that mold is rising above the ceilings in your home, look for water staining on the ceilings. A borescope can be used to look inside the ceiling.

If the room you are sleeping in has advanced dry rot due to a neglected leak, your plaster or drywall ceiling is likely very weak and could fall in on you. Large pieces could cause injury, while small pieces could be ingested, inhaled, or get in your eyes.

Inspect the roof itself, looking for raised, missing or damaged shingles. You should also inspect the joints around the roof and the flashing around pipes and vents for a tight seal. Plumbing leaks can cause ceiling leaks in areas beside or below them. If the dampness doesn't dry out, suspect a leaky pipe.
