Do not call 911 to cancel an alarm activation. You must call your monitoring station. Review with your alarm / monitoring company the procedures you expect them to follow when an alarm activates. Put your instructions in writing.
Call the local FD emergency number. Provide your name and address and advise the alarm was set off in error. The FD will most likely send at least 1 vehicle to verify or maybe just one police car. No biggie. It happens all the time.
If you believe you may have accidentally set off your alarm, call your alarm monitoring company and inform them of the trip. While we go through a phone list that typically involves calling the premise, dispatching police/fire, and contacting keyholders, you can always contact us, too.
Most Burglars Admit Alarm Systems Deter Them
60% of the burglars claimed an alarm would change their minds. “The benefit of a security alarm comes more from deterring crime and limiting loss if a burglary does happen,” says Bill Nelson, owner of Nelson Alarm in Indianapolis.
Alarm cut-off devices
Alarm systems should have an automatic cut-off device fitted to stop the alarm sounding after 20 minutes. Most modern alarms have such a device already fitted, but cut-out devices can be fitted to older, existing systems.
The belief that a smoke detector or fire alarm will automatically activate the fire department or send a signal to local first responders is a common misunderstanding. While some systems may be integrated with monitoring services, that's not always the case.
Why did my fire alarm randomly go off in the middle of the night? This is likely due to one of the common causes like low battery, dirt buildup, humidity, or insects interfering with the sensor. Test the alarm and clean it thoroughly to try and resolve the issue. Make sure batteries are fresh and secure.
The most common causes of false alarms are operator error, improper installation, including poorly positioned motion sensors, and a lack of maintenance. The good news is that these causes are preventable.
The Autowatch Ghost Immobiliser
The Ghost 2 Immobiliser is a security device that can be installed in your vehicle discreetly, (without causing any damage to the vehicle) it works by preventing your engine to start unless certain buttons within your car are pressed in a specific sequence.
Causes for this include dust or debris in or on the sensor, or age; if the sensor is old it might need to be replaced. Dodgy wiring – Issues with the wiring of a wired alarm system are another common cause for triggering the alarm.
Accidental alarms
If an alarm is accidentally triggered, cancel the alarm with your Base, ADT keypad or the ADT+ app. If you are unable to cancel the alarm in time, keep your phone line free so the ADT Monitoring Centers can reach you.
The alarm in your home security system is designed to be a deterrent to intruders, as well as alert occupants and draw attention to your home, whether that be from neighbours, passers-by or authorities. Systems will sound for about 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the system, before stopping and automatically re-arming.
Remove the AC power to the home alarm console from the wall directly. Use your console's access key (or another item such as a small screw) to unlock and open the system's backing. Lastly, disconnect at least one of the wires that are attached to the system's main battery, which is blocky and noticeable in most units.
Reset the home security system
Even though you can turn the alarm off on your home security system without assistance, you cannot reset it on your own. Contacting the security company will allow you to have the system reset, although this may mean creating a new security code or pin number.
Depending on the jurisdiction, it can lead to criminal charges, fines, penalties, and potentially civil liability. It is essential to understand that false alarms not only waste valuable resources but can also put lives at risk by diverting emergency personnel from real emergencies.
Alarms fitted to your home/business or vehicle should not become a source of nuisance to your neighbours, you have a legal responsibility to ensure that any alarm activated should ring for: a maximum 20 minutes – home/business; and. your vehicle alarm should have a 5 minute cut-out device fitted.
Does the Fire Department Charge an Emergency Response Fee? Answer: An emergency response fee is a charge that some municipalities may impose to recoup the costs associated with responding to an emergency. This fee is not universal and varies widely depending on the location and the specific circumstances of the call.
First, your home security company is instantly notified when the alarm is triggered and will immediately be contacting you to assess the situation. They will also notify the authorities. Second, you can call someone outside of your home in order to get help.
Will the Police respond to any burglar or Personal attack alarm? No, only ones that are Installed, Maintained and Monitored by an Approved company such as those accredited by the NSI or the SSAIB (e.g. not Verisure, some ADT products etc).
This usually involves disconnecting the power source. Wait for a minute, then reconnect the power to reboot the system. After the system has rebooted, test it by arming and disarming using your user code. This ensures the reset was successful, and the system is functioning as intended.
