In many recently-constructed homes, the HVAC c-wire is already installed. However, in homes that are only a few years old or older, the wire may need to be installed as part of the new smart thermostat installation.
For heating and cooling systems, it will have a red Rc and a red Rh wire. Though both wires are red, they are not interchangeable. An extra unused wire in the wall can be used as the C wire for your new thermostat. The extra wire will also need to be connected to the C (common) terminal at the heating and cooling system. This will provide power to your new thermostat.
This is why some folks say you must have a C wire. However, there is a trick or workaround to get a 'fake' C wire. Simply use the G (green fan power wire as a C wire). It will work.
Honeywell (and others such as Trane) use a C wire on models that use WiFi or voice recognition or Z-wave so they can have a 24V connection. All thermostats use low voltage from the other connectors and typically use the batteries as a backup when there's no C wire.
Blue or Black (C): The Unsung Hero

You get 24V AC between R and C. Without C wire, you don't get any usable voltage. Old mechanical thermostats using mercury or bi-metal does not need common wire because it doesn't require power and often there are only 4 conductors, so connecting C wire will not be possible.
The C wire's primary purpose is to give power to operate the thermostat itself. No, they're not like the RH and RC wires because these two power the systems and not the thermostat. If your unit doesn't have any, this is nothing to be worried about.
The placement of the R wire, also known as the power or 24-volt wire, depends on the specific HVAC system and thermostat setup. In most cases, the R wire is connected to either the RC (cooling) terminal or the RH (heating) terminal on the thermostat.

The C wire is simply the “common” side of the transformer 24V output (there are two wires coming out of the 24V transformer, “hot” and “common”). Just tap into the “common”. The R (red) wire is really the power source. The C wire closes the circuit and allows continuous flow of 24V energy to power the thermostat.
'Common' is the terminal to which the live core wire is attached. This will usually be brown, or red on older circuits. L1 is the terminal connecting the circuit to the line out to the light and should be connected to the blue wire. If you have older circuits, the wire connected to L1 might be black.
