Avoid watering when temperatures are below 40°F or when sustained freezing temperatures are expected within 24 hours as this water will freeze and not be available to the plants.
Water for Plants During Winter
As a rule of thumb, water when the soil is dry to the touch, the temperature is not below 40 degrees F. (4 C.) and, if possible, when the wind isn't blowing. Drying winds may carry off much of the water you're trying to apply to the roots of your beloved plants.
In fall, plants do not need as much water as they may have needed in summer. But rather than stop watering altogether, it's best to wean them from weekly watering to every other week to monthly throughout fall.
In cold weather, water should be trickled slowly into the soil. Water only when air temperatures are above 40 degrees F. Apply water at mid-day so there is time to soak in before possible freezing at night.

A lot of plants can handle some neglect when it comes to folks forgetting to water. However, all plants need water to survive. Forgetting to water every now and then or watering a day or two later than you should can result in dead blooms and burnt foliage but these plants can survive that.
Signs Your Plants May Be Too Cold
The leaves brown and fall off. If your plant is too cold, it may begin to die, and its leaves will brown and fall off. The leaves turn yellow.
Most of the houseplants we grow originated in the tropics or sub-tropics where rainfall is relatively warm. Ice cold water will cause root shock, which may lead to permanent root damage, leaf drop and other problems. Allow the water to warm to room temperature before watering the plants.
Seedlings, with their tender new leaves, often give up the ghost when temperatures dip to 32-33°F. Tropical plants have differing low-temperature thresholds. Some keel over when temps fall to 40°F; others crumble at 35°F. Other plants are just hardy by nature and can withstand temperatures as low as 18-20°F.
Light freeze - 29° to 32° Fahrenheit will kill tender plants. Moderate freeze - 25° to 28° Fahrenheit is widely destructive to most vegetation. Severe or hard freeze - 25° Fahrenheit and colder causes heavy damage to most plants.

Temperature. Most plants, like people, are comfortable in daytime temperatures between roughly 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit, and nighttime temps above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Morning watering is actually preferable to evening watering as the plant has time to dry before the sun goes down. At night, water tends to rest in the soil, around the roots, and on the foliage, which encourages rot, fungal growth, and insects.
