12x24 and 24x24 tile are the most popular in areas we served in. More and more of our clients are gravitating towards even larger tiles to avoid too many grout lines. This also depends on the size of the space you looking to tile. Larger space needs larger tile, medium space work with medium tiles.
Smaller rooms don't mean you must have small tiles too. In fact, larger tiles will make even the smallest areas feel bigger. Luxury vinyl tiles or planks are popular types of flooring that are easy to find in larger sizes. Large tiles are most common in sizes of 12 inches by 24 inches or 18 inches by 36 inches.

Diagonal and Diamond Arrangement
That being said, we'd often recommend laying tiles in a diagonal or diamond arrangement when trying to make a small room look bigger.

This means that installation costs can be higher than with smaller tiles. Additionally, if the tiles are not installed properly, they can crack or become damaged, which can be costly to repair.
The golden rule is, try as much as possible to avoid small pieces of tile, or, try to keep them hidden. The same basic idea applies to the vertical lines of your job. Try to minimise any small cuts. It is best to start with a centre line and mark along your wall where each vertical joint will occur.
Use a tape measure to measure the distance from one corner to the corner on the diagonal, and write down the measurement. Take the tape measure to repeat the process for the remaining two corners and write down the measurements. If the measurements are identical, you have a perfect square.
Flooring Direction: Perpendicular

Lighter tones reflect light beautifully, creating an airy atmosphere that's especially helpful in places like basements or rooms with little natural light. On the flip side, if your space is already filled with abundant light from large windows or skylights, you might want to consider a bold dark wood flooring option.
Surprisingly, dark flooring colors, including deep brown plush carpeting and dark simulated woods, can be beneficial in rooms with limited space. Unlike dark walls, the combination of deep coloring on floors and light-colored walls and ceilings make the ceiling appear higher and elevate the entire room.
As with larger planks, making a room appear bigger works exactly the same with tiles. Choose tiles which are at least 12 inch squares to help open up the space.
Similarly, vertical subway tiles can transform your home, making rooms appear taller and more spacious. In contrast, horizontal subway tiles have a tendency to visually widen a space. The parallel lines running horizontally across the wall create a sense of breadth, making rooms feel more expansive and inviting.
Measure the Room
Small to medium-sized rooms typically work better with larger-sized tiles. Remember the larger the tile size, the bigger the space appears. You should also think of obstacles, like a kitchen island, that will affect the the way the tile will work in the space.
Starting at one point on the baseline, measure and mark 3 feet (or another unit) along it. From that same starting point, measure 4 feet perpendicular to the baseline and mark this point as well. Measure between the two points you just marked. If the distance is 5 feet, your lines form a perfect 90-degree angle.
