Your salt levels will vary depending on the type of chlorinator you have. If you're using the Water TechniX Salt water chlorinator then you should try to aim for a salt level of around 3,000 to 4,000 ppm.
To make your salt water chlorinator last, you'll need to perform regular maintenance on it just as you do every other part of your pool. Try to maintain a consistent salt level of between 2,700 parts per million (ppm) and 3,400 ppm, with 3,200 ppm being ideal.
Choose a mid-point setting on the 1-10 dial. The higher the setting, the greater the dissolution rate. A setting of 5 may be too high, and it depends on the number of tablets in the feeder. You could fill it full, with 15 tablets, and put it on a setting of 1-2, or add only 2 tablets and put it on a setting of 8-9.
We suggest you start your salt chlorine generator at 50 percent output and run it for a couple of days, then check the chlorine level. In a balanced pool, a good chlorine level is 1-3 parts per million. If your chlorine levels are low, you can raise the percentage, and if it's high you can lower the percentage.
Chlorine pucks also allow you to manually control how much chlorine is in your pool's water. It is usually 1 chlorine puck for every 5,000 gallons of water.
The IntelliChlor SCG is designed only to produce chlorine. The IntelliChlor SCG does not monitor or control chlorine levels in the pool or spa water. It is the pool ownerʼs responsibility for monitoring and maintaining free chlorine levels at the APSP recommended range of 2.0 to 4.0 parts per million (ppm).
Most pools need the chlorine generator to be on for 8-12 hours per day. This will produce enough chlorine to properly sanitize the water.
The pump and filter system should be allowed to run for at least 24 hours after the superchlorination process has been initiated.
THE POOL MUST BE CLOSED DURING SUPERCHLORINATION
The high levels of chlorine used when Superchlorinating pools can make them dangerous to swim in, so always make the pool or spa off limits while you Superchlorinate it. Superchlorination will only last about a day after adding the chemicals.
Super Chlorinating a pool is the process of sanitizing the pool water by adding large amounts of chlorine. Super chlorination increases the amount of sanitation to further eliminate germs, bacteria and algae from the pool.
When should I superchlorinate my pool? Chlorine pools should superchlorinate weekly to ensure proper sanitation of the water and prevent bacteria and algae growth. Superchlorination is recommended after heavy bather loads and/or heavy rain fall.
Your pool system including chlorine generator should be operated often enough to completely turn your pool water over at least every 12 hours or twice a day.
The rule of thumb is generally 8 hours, although it could be anywhere from 6-12 hours, depending on your pool's size. Each pool is unique, so to keep your pool pump efficient and effective, you need to figure out exactly what your pool's turnover rate is.
Insufficient chlorine in your pool
When you add a bag of salt into the water sodium chloride dissolves and splits into two separate parts – sodium and chloride ions. Chloride won't kill algae, it needs to be turned into chlorine to do this.
Most Chlorinators work best when your Salt level is sitting at 5000ppm (parts per million). To give you a yard-stick, the ocean is around 35,000ppm(ppm). Your Chlorinator uses salt in the water to produce chlorine, so low salt equals low chlorine output.
The water salt level is between 2500 ppm and 2900 ppm, salt should be added to the pool. The cell will continue to produce chlorine, but will be at a reduced level.
Running the pump at night should only be when you are doing a major chemical treatment such as algae clean-up. Your pool is more vulnerable during the day, plants don't grow at night the way they do during the day–that's true of ALL plants including Algae.
The size of your pool, the efficiency of your pump and filter, and how dirty your pool is are just some of the factors you need to consider. Nevertheless, most pool cleaning professionals would advise against running a pool pump for more than 8 hours a day.
Low flow = poor circulation which will lead to algae in the pool. Bottom line, the filter must be backwashed on a regular basis to ensure that your pool water is clear. "When do we need to backwash?" - It is recommended to backwash your filter once every 4-6 weeks of regular use.
A chlorinator consumes only a very small amount of current. Thus for a 100 m3 pool, the annual electricity consumption will be between 150 and 200 W.
On average, you should run your pool pump around 6-8 hours per day during winter and 10-12 hours per day during summer. Note that you need to run your pool pump longer during summer because algae grow more in warm temperatures.
Generally, a salt cell lasts for about 10,000 hours, which is usually around five years for most home pool owners. If your cell is close to or exceeds the 10,000-hour mark, and you notice any of the above signs, it could very well need replacement.
This is why many pool experts recommend that you turn down, or shut off, your saltwater chlorine generator (SWG) while you're shocking your pool. Otherwise, you're running the risk of damaging the salt cell. And that could lead to it not generating enough chlorine after the shocking process finishes.
To superchlorinate, add AT LEAST 2.5 ounces (5 tablespoons, 75 grams) of chlorine for every 100 gallons (400 litres) of spa water or part thereof. Adding more is fine and never a bad idea.
