There are no municipal codes that prescribe an upper cabinet height. However, the average among many kitchen interior designers is 54 inches from the floor to the bottom corner of the cabinet, leaving a space of 18 inches between the countertops and the upper cabinets.
The standard space between the countertop and upper cabinets is around 18 inches.
The upper cabinet height doesn't always have to be installed “standard”. On average, the space between the countertop and the upper cabinets is between 18-22 inches.
The Most Common Wall Hanging Upper Cabinet Height Options
The upper kitchen cabinet should be installed at least 54 inches from the floor to allow for a conventional backsplash. Keep the upper kitchen cabinets within comfortable reach by keeping the base cabinets between 32 and 36 inches high.
It's not necessary that the kitchen cabinets have to touch the ceiling. It's completely dependable on your choice. So do you prefer the smooth, continuous appearance provided by cabinets that extend all the way to the ceiling? Some people prefer the look of a continuous wall cabinet with no space above it.
Overhead cabinets and splashbacks
This ensures that you don't hit your head when working at the benchtop! The standard height for overhead cabinets is 720mm but can be custom made if you are wanting to achieve a full height look where the cabinets reach the ceiling.
The most common heights available are 30cm, 70cm and 90cms. However, your overhead cabinet height is influenced by what is happening below it. For example, overhead or upper cabinets near cooktops need a minimum clearance of 600mm, or 700mm if near a gas stove.
It's only necessary to have the cabinets themselves level. With lots of shims, this can be done over an uneven floor or against a wall that is out of plumb.
Generally, upper cabinets are mounted with the bottom edge being 54-inches above the floor. That means if you have 8-foot ceilings, your upper cabinets would be 42-inches tall, while a 9-foot ceiling has 54 inches available.
If you've come this far and the little gap is still haunting you, there are a few routes you can take. 1) You can ask the installer to seal the gap with caulk, or silicone. 2) You can buy and ornamental molding, and have a handyman cover the gap right up!
Standard countertop overhang is 1 ½ inches.
Keep in mind that this is 1 ½ inches over the front edge of the base cabinet. While some countertops may have different overhang measurements, this is the number that is seen as standard for homes.
Their depths are certainly never identical. In fact lower cabinets are usually two feet deep, covered by a countertop that is longer only by an inch. Presumably designed to stay out of the way and create an uninhibited work space, upper cabinets therefore were made with a usual depth of only twelve to fifteen inches.
No matter how svelte, how knobless, how blindingly white they are painted, upper kitchen cabinets take up a whole lot of head space in a room that benefits hugely from cleanliness and fresh air.
With regards to positioning a wall unit above a sink, we would usually recommend around a 600mm gap between the worktop and units. If you can clean the pots and not bang your head then you won't go far wrong!
Also, you could use 12” cabinets above the 42” ones and then fill the gaps with crown moldings or other decorative work. → For 10-foot-tall ceilings, the best option would be to have cabinetry makers build the custom cabinets to fit the space perfectly.

What's a Soffit? A kitchen soffit is usually a boxy structure built to hide wiring, pipes, or other mechanicals, or to fill the space between the top of your cabinets and the ceiling. Depending on the age of your home they may be very large and perhaps even extend out past the cabinets.
Pacing either potted houseplants or faux vines and other greenery on top of the cabinets in single sprigs or clusters can be a great way to decorate a kitchen. In addition to using greenery, you can introduce or repeat décor colors with silk floral arrangements and vines.
There is a range of kitchen cabinets to choose from and they can be built floor-to-ceiling with handcrafted doors, open kitchen shelving, or glazed doors; whichever is best for your space. Plus, full-height cupboards offer useful storage for gadgets or crockery you don't use or need very often.
You can build the cabinets to the ceiling (most expensive option), keep the area open (no cost!), build a soffit to match the cabinets, or add a drywall soffit.
If you think they look too crowded or you like the way cabinets look when they have some space above, then ceiling-height cabinets may not be the right choice. Some homes also have non-standard ceiling sizes. You might, for instance, have a soaring ceiling on one side that slopes down throughout the kitchen.
Since countertops sit directly on the cabinets, the cabinetry must be installed prior to the final measurements, fabrication, and installation. If an apron or farmhouse sink is being used, it must be installed prior to template process.
A standard bathroom cabinet overhang is about 1 to 1 1/2-inches. This slight overhang is attractive and helps protect the cabinets below the counters from spills. However, some homeowners desire a larger or smaller overhang due to the benefits each can offer.
