Ipe wood is a popular choice for a horizontal fence if you use hardwood; a less expensive option is cedar for a softwood alternative. Once you get the posts properly set about six feet apart, it's just a matter of face-nailing the fence boards in even, level rows.
Hardwoods like Ipe and Mangaris are gorgeous when applied horizontally because the natural grain that runs the length of the planks creates a high-end look. Softwoods like pine, Douglas fir, redwood, and cedar are also great fencing choices.
A horizontal slat fence is a fence that uses horizontal boards or planks that are usually spaced to provide some visibility through the fence. Slatted fences can use wood planks or pickets of the same width or varying widths.
Rails. Rails are used as additional support for a fence. They are typically 2x4" thick strips of wood that run horizontally along the fence.
Durability
Horizontal fences are prone to sagging if not reinforced with posts or cross beams. But they're usually made from higher-grade lumber than traditional vertical fences. That said, vertical fences already include reinforcements that make them very durable.
Horizontal fences tend to be more expensive than vertical fences because they require a higher grade of lumber for the fence boards to reduce the possibility of sagging. Even so, like any horizontally-oriented board, they may sag over time.

Varieties of Wood for Slatted Fencing and Cladding
These include Spruce, Pine, or Redwood and, if treated correctly, will last between 8-15 years. Any timber installed outside must be pressure treated to a minimum of Use Class 3, and Use Class 4 if in direct contact with the ground.
The key drawbacks are that horizontal fences can be relatively inflexible to install, and so aren't suitable for all properties. And if they're not installed perfectly, they have a habit of sagging noticeably... which undermines the clean, modern geometric orderliness of the style.
We would use deck boards instead of fence boards: The difference in thickness is quite substantial, and this will prevent them from warping as much as standard fence boards will.
Gap: Small gaps between horizontal boards are standard for horizontal fences and impact the final appearance of the fence. Generally, we will use gaps between ¼” and 1”. If you want no gaps between boards, we would recommend using a tongue and groove board.
What Type Of Wood Fence Lasts The Longest? Redwood, cedar or pressure-treated pine last the longest. A fence can last about 20 years, if made of a turnout resistant wood. Then posts are usually the first to go; panels survive longer because they typically don't touch the ground.
That is why vinyl fencing is the longest lasting fence material. It does not need to be stained, and it is easy to clean with soap and water. Vinyl fencing is the superior choice among fence materials.
Redwood is arguably the most extensively used type of wood for wood fencing and even though it comes at a high cost, redwood's quality, durability, and aesthetic value make it among the best options.
Cedar is close-grained softwood, durable and rot-resistant but more forgiving in price. It is a great choice for people with a more limited budget, with installation costs for horizontal wood fences ranging from $7 to $12 per linear foot.
To create a uniform gap within proportion, an 18-20mm space is recommended between boards.
The posts should be no more than six feet apart, if more than six feet apart, the stability of the fence may be compromised.
A chain-link fence is typically the least expensive option, while a wrought iron fence is among the most expensive. You can get a new fence for as little as $500 if you do it yourself and choose a simple design and material. Or, you could spend as much as $8,500 on a complex fencing project with multiple materials.
Wrought Iron Fencing
The wrought iron fence is the strongest and most long-lasting fencing option available. Featuring a classic design with wide spaces that beautifully display landscape and gardens, you won't find more a suitable option for vintage and retro style homes.
The foil is considered by many fencers to be the most difficult weapon to master and offers a lifetime of challenge to its proponents.
A vinyl fence or an aluminum fence can add to the resale value of a home, while a chain-link fence adds little to no value. Overall, the best way to increase property value with a fence is to choose a design that is both functional and attractive.
Vinyl fences
Putting up a vinyl fence around your property is without a doubt one of the most cost-effective options. PVC Fence materials can be a little more expensive at first, but their long lifespan and little-to-no maintenance qualities will save you more money than any other fence material.
While one-by-six boards are the most common lumber for a horizontal fence, you can also use one-by-four and one-by-eight boards or a combination of different sizes. Cut your boards to the correct measurement using a chop saw or circular saw. Again, they should go from the center of one post to the center of the next.
