Fresco-secco (or a secco or fresco finto) is a wall painting technique where pigments mixed with an organic binder and/or lime are applied onto dry plaster.
A secco or fresco-secco painting is done on dry plaster (secco meaning "dry" in Italian). The pigments thus require a binding medium, such as egg (tempera), glue or oil to attach the pigment to the wall.
The technique being used when paint is applied to a dry plaster wall is called fresco secco. In fresco secco, the paint is applied to the dry plaster surface, allowing for more detailed and precise work compared to buon fresco.
fresco painting, method of painting water-based pigments on freshly applied plaster, usually on wall surfaces. The colours, which are made by grinding dry-powder pigments in pure water, dry and set with the plaster to become a permanent part of the wall.
Fresco secco (“dry fresco”) is a process that dispenses with the complex preparation of the wall with wet plaster. Instead, dry, finished walls are soaked with limewater and painted while wet. The colours do not penetrate into the plaster but form a surface film, like any other paint.

My technique is a meticulous one of stringing tiny glass seed beads in patterns, laying down a very fine line of glue directly on the object, gluing down one line of beads, and pulling out the thread. It's a very slow, zen-like process, but so rewarding as the designs grow and reveal themselves to me.
Sfumato (English: /sfuːˈmɑːtoʊ/ sfoo-MAH-toh, Italian: [sfuˈmaːto]; lit. 'smoked off', i.e. 'blurred') is a painting technique for softening the transition between colours, mimicking an area beyond what the human eye is focusing on, or the out-of-focus plane.
Fresco is a painting technique in which pigments are applied to a layer of fresh, damp lime plaster. Once dry, it creates a durable, vibrant image deeply embedded in the wall.
Fresco secco's limitations were described as being less durable than other techniques and sensitive to peeling since the paints do not permanently stick to the wall. In fresco secco, water could dissolve unreacted lime if it comes into contact with it, which would be problematic for the durability of the surface.
Fresco. Fresco is a mural painting technique that involves painting with water-based paint directly onto wet plaster so that the paint becomes an integral part of the plaster.
Painting on dried plaster can also cause the paint to dry very fast, leaving you with irregular brush strokes and an uneven finish. So to combat this, you need to apply a mist coat.
One of our easy, Harris-approved tips for painting new plaster that helps to overcome this issue is using a watered-down first layer of paint called a mist coat. This mist coat helps the plaster to absorb the paint superbly.
Not technically a plaster, gesso is a mixture of rabbit skin glue binder, pigment and chalk. When it dries, it forms a thin but rigid surface that, when applied to a flexible material like canvas, can be bent to crack the gesso and form intricate patterns.
Unione. Another painting technique where the colors transition smoothly, without hard lines, Unione (union of the planes) varies from Sfumato by keeping the intensity between the colors. Light tones are emphasized, and dark shadowing is reduced. The artist Raphael is credited for the development of this technique.
Sgraffito (Italian: [zɡrafˈfiːto]; pl. sgraffiti) is an artistic or decorative technique of scratching through a coating on a hard surface to reveal parts of another underlying coating which is in a contrasting colour.
To show the effects of light upon curved surfaces and enhance the effects of chiaroscuro, Leonardo da Vinci perfected the technique of sfumato, which he described as "without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus plane." Meaning, "to vanish like smoke," sfumato involved applying multiple thin ...
Fresco secco, on the other hand, refers to the application of paint to dry plaster. For the true fresco method, a charcoal outline of the painting is traced onto a rough undercoat of plaster known as the arriciatto. Following, a fresh layer of plaster, the intonaco, is applied to an area suitible for one day's work.
Preparing newly plastered walls
First and foremost, let the plaster dry. Paint won't adhere properly to wet plaster, so make sure it's fully dried. This takes around 3-5 days for overskim or 4-6 weeks for a new plaster wall, though it can take longer depending on humidity and ventilation.
Fresco – a painting done rapidly in watercolor on wet plaster on a wall or ceiling, so that the colors penetrate the plaster and become fixed as it dries.

A fresco is a type of wall painting. The term comes from the Italian word for fresh because plaster is applied to the walls while still wet. There are two methods of carrying out fresco painting: buon fresco and fresco a secco. For both methods layers of fine plaster are spread over the wall surface.
