Typically the setback is 2" to 2-1/2" from the front of the counter, depending on the countertop overhang, the type of sink bowl and the size of the sink deck. To create a template, turn the sink upside down on the piece of plywood and draw around it. Or place template transfer paper or cardboard template on plywood.
Measure and Mark the Kitchen Sink's Layout
If sink has a template, align it with the mark on the counter. Place its back edge 1½ inches from and parallel to the counter.
Most sink manufacturers provide a template. Position the template so it is centered on the sink cabinet and is at least 1 1/2 inches back from the countertop's front edge. If your countertop is deeper than 24 inches, place it farther back, but not more than 4 inches.
A general rule of thumb is 4" for a typical 2 bowl kitchen sink and 3-1/2" for a vanity sink. (in one post someone mentioned they had a 7" space from edge to a vqanity sink.
Standard worktop is 600mm deep usually you would have around 50 mm from front edge of worktop to sink and around 50 mm at rear.
Regardless of where you place your kitchen sink, you will want to make sure to have at least 20 to 24 inches of countertop space on each side of the sink. This will give you enough room to leave drying dishes, or to prepare food for cooking.
Clearance in front of the vanity: 21" minimum, although 30" is recommended for a total of 51" from the wall.
A sink no larger than 29 inches will fit in a 42-inch corner cabinet. In most cases, the sink is three inches from the cabinet's front frame. If you insist on a more oversized sink, you must position it back toward the front edge.
Place a sink near a dishwasher
You most certainly want your dishwasher and sink to be next to one another. This will make loading the dishwasher easier and more efficient; you can just scrape or rinse off your plates in the sink before setting them in the dishwasher.
OVERHANG - The countertop extends over the edge of the sink on all sides by approximately 1/8" - 1/4". Use caution with this installation to be sure that accessories such as colanders or cutting boards will fit properly. REVEAL - The countertop edge sits approximately 1/8" - 1/4" back from the edgeof the sink rim.
Standard countertop overhang is 1 ½ inches.
Keep in mind that this is 1 ½ inches over the front edge of the base cabinet. While some countertops may have different overhang measurements, this is the number that is seen as standard for homes. While 1 ½ inches is the most common, it's far from mandatory.
The standard height for upper cabinets from the counter is 18 inches, or 1 foot and 6 inches. They shouldn't be less than 15 inches away or more than 20 inches away. This also means the height to where the bottom of your upper cabinets starts. This gives enough space to put things like toaster ovens and blenders.
A standard countertop usually has an overhang of 1½ inches. Although some countertops may have a longer or shorter overhang, this number is generally the standard length for an overhang in homes.

The height of the cabinet above a kitchen sink hangs between 24-inches and 36-inches above the countertop. This allows for ample overhead space.
As a general rule of thumb, you will want at least a 1/2" of clearance on both sides between the lip of the sink and the inside walls of the cabinet (1/4" is tight, but doable!).
The stream of water should not hit so high on the wall of the vessel that it causes splashing. The necessary length of the spout, or reach, will vary depending upon the angle of the water flow and the shape of the basin, but it is important that the water hits the sink bottom, particularly if it is a shallow sink.
Buttrick recommends a sink that is at least 27 inches long, 19 inches wide, and 7.25 inches deep. “Once you factor in the three-quarter-inch counter depth, the sink is eight inches deep,” he says.
The maximum overhang is no more than 1/3 of the total dimension of the countertop – not to exceed 15”. Overhang greater than 15” requires corbels or flush mounted steel supports. Supports must be designed to bear the weight of the countertop and be mounted to studs or equivalent load bearing structure.
1. Purpose. If the counter is to be used for food prep, the standard measurement for the overhang is 1-1/2 inches. This is long enough to provide some protection for your cabinets without forming an obstruction.
The maximum overhang for a quartz countertop should not be more than 1/3 of the countertop depth. Also, it should not exceed 15 inches. Quartz countertop overhang measurements determine how long or wide a kitchen countertop should be, allowing buyers to choose countertops easier based on the design of their kitchen.
Guidelines recommend a minimum of 12” landing area on one side of a cooking surface, and 15” on the other side. In a peninsula or island situation, it is also recommended to have 9” of countertop behind the cooking surface if the countertop height is the same height as the surface cooking appliance.
If there is no walkway behind the island or peninsula, the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) recommends a minimum of 32″ of clearance space between the edge of the countertop or table to any wall or other obstruction behind the seating area.
Countertop Width Standards
Most homes are fitted with kitchen countertops that measure 25.5 inches in width (from the wall to the edge of the counter), with some measuring up to 28 inches.
A standard bathroom cabinet overhang is about 1 to 1 1/2-inches. This slight overhang is attractive and helps protect the cabinets below the counters from spills. However, some homeowners desire a larger or smaller overhang due to the benefits each can offer.
