Feast of the Presentation introduces Jesus as the Light. The burning candle symbolizes His abiding presence in the midst of the Christian community.
Throughout church history, certain church traditions lit candles to signify the presence of the Holy Spirit within the space. The bouncing, burning light off of the wick can be a reminder to us that although we cannot see Him, the Holy Spirit inhabits believers, igniting a type of fire within us to make His name known.
Candles remind believers of the power and purity of God. In keeping candles burning, figuratively and symbolically in our minds and hearts, we note our desire to remain close to God, and to reflect the love of God as we go through our daily duties at home and in the workplace.
In a quite unique way, candles radiate messages of romance, passion, security, warmth, hope, spirituality, mystery, to name just a few. Candles indeed are a burning example that the whole is more than sum of its parts – be they just a little wax and wick as they are.
If our thoughts or actions don't agree with Scripture, he alerts us. We feel a check in our spirit, or a sense that what we're doing isn't right. It's a warning designed to steer us away from dangerous or ungodly thoughts or actions.
For many people, feeling the Holy Spirit for the first time can feel like intense peace and love. It can also feel like a sense of inner knowing or understanding or being surrounded by light and a holy presence.
The Holy Spirit makes our conscience sensitive to His leading. Sometimes you may sense He's speaking to you through a gentle conviction. Other times He will prompt you in a specific way to take action, say something, or accept the truth He's revealing.
