It's recommended to have at least 40 inches of space in front of your oven and 48-60 inches between your stove and other appliances so the door can open completely with plenty of room, especially if you have a kitchen island.
Guidelines recommend 15” of space on either one or both sides of an oven, or if the oven is in a tall cabinet and this is not possible, to have 15” of landing space no more than 48” in front of the oven as long as it does not open into the main walkway.
The 3x4 Rule. The most important rule is the one that applies to all home cooks: You need three separate counters, and they should be about four feet long. Call it the 3x4 Rule.
MEASURE FOR STANDARD WALL OVEN CAPACITY
Expect around 2 to 3.5 cubic feet of interior space for a 24-inch-wide single wall oven and around 4 to 5 cubic feet for a 27 or 30-inch-wide single wall oven.
Additionally, leave at least 40 inches (1.01 m) in front of the range to ensure the door can open fully. Leave at least 24 inches (60.9 cm) of vertical space between the stove and a noncombustible surface, such as a vent hood.
A standard cutout width is usually 30 inches wide to accommodate a 30-inch range that is 29-7/8 inches wide.
Stove dimensions can vary between the stove size itself and the cutout measurements. For example, a 30-inch stove may actually measure at 29⅞ inches wide, but it will require a 30-inch cutout for installation. It's important to check the exact specifications of each stove to make sure it will fit your available space.
Without a backguard, a stove or range should typically be installed at least 6 inches away from a combustible back wall surface, like drywall. With a backguard, the range can usually be installed with zero wall clearance.
You'll also want to have about 42-48 inches of clearance in front of your wall oven to comfortably load and unload dishes.
A 30-inch wall oven may require a cabinet size that's approximately 33 inches wide. A general rule of thumb is to add an extra 3 inches wider than the wall oven. For instance, with a 27-inch wall oven, you'll want around a 30-inch cabinet size.
Rule 1: The Work Triangle
The “Work Triangle” – the triangle made by the stove, the sink and the refrigerator – should be compact enough that it allows convenient and effective circulation for the chef, but generous enough that two people working in the kitchen aren't bumping into one another.
Food held between 5oC and 60oC for less than 2 hours can be used, sold or put back in the refrigerator to use later. Food held between 5oC and 60oC for 2-4 hours can still be used or sold, but can't be put back in the fridge. Food held between 5oC and 60oC for 4 hours or more must be thrown away.
The 1/3 rule in cabinet hardware is a design guideline that helps achieve balanced proportions when selecting drawer pulls and cabinet handles. According to this rule, the length of the pull should be approximately one-third the width of the drawer or cabinet door.
Top tips to remember... Standard width at around 59.5ccm. Standard height of the oven space is also around 59.5cm. Single ovens are 56cm deep but you'll need an extra couple of centimetres for any gas pipes.
Many installers may recommend a distance of 3-6 inches of space being the minimum. However, we always recommend increasing that to around nine inches of open space. The key here is to make this decision with the safety of the occupants in mind.
A refrigerator may be installed next to a range or wall oven as long as air clearances for both appliances are met. The clearances are located in the installation instructions included with the appliance. Failure to adhere to the recommended clearances can void the warranty.
As a rule of thumb, a wall oven requires around 3 inches of room in between your cabinet walls. This gap will enable you to install virtually any standard oven housing unit. It will also help shield the surrounding cabinetry from the oven's heat. A 30-inch-wide range is typical for a wall oven.
Household cooking appliances shall have a vertical clearance above the cooking top of not less than 30 inches (760 mm) to combustible material and metal cabinets.
600mm of vertical clearance to a combustible surface, and 200mm of horizontal distance to a vertical surface. If these measurements can't be met, the surface in question must be protected with a fire resistant material in accordance with AG/601.
Ranges. Electric Ranges require 0" side wall clearance above the counter height but up to 6" is recommended to avoid possible heat damage to surrounding surfaces.
Take into account whether or not your kitchen has enough space for a wall oven. Standard kitchen ranges are typically around 30" wide, but a wall oven of the same size needs a 33" wide cabinet. It's possible to get smaller wall ovens, but this could also impact your ability to cook larger dishes.
The counter or the platform area: On the counter: Small sized microwave can easily be placed in a corner on the counter or the kitchen platform. Never place the oven near the sink or gas stove but look for an ideal corner that might be near to the refrigerator since it is good for convenience.
Common range or oven styles include slide-in, drop-in, freestanding, extra-wide commercial or compact styles. There is no true “standard” range size. Many ranges are about 30 inches in width, 27 to 29 inches in depth and 36 to 36.5 inches in height.
