In all First Alert® ONELINK® alarms, there are two silence features: Alarm Silence can quiet nuisance alarms for several minutes. Low Battery Silence can temporarily silence the low battery chirp for up to eight hours before replacing the battery.
You can silence a smoke alarm. Smoke alarms have both detectors and built-in alarm modules. Many have hush buttons that you press that temporarily shuts off the alarm and puts the device in low sensitivity for about five minutes, which gives you time to clear out the smoke and products of combustion.
Reset the Smoke Detector: Sometimes, a smoke detector just needs a good reset to stop the chirping. You can do this by turning off the power at the circuit breaker, removing the detector from the mounting bracket and disconnecting the power supply. Then, press and hold the test button for about 15 seconds.
If the smoke is not too dense, after ten minutes the alarm will return to normal operation. Blink once every 10 seconds None (smoke alarm silenced) Alarm hush feature silences smoke alarm for approx. 10 minutes.
The Silence Feature can temporarily quiet an unwanted alarm for up to 10 minutes. To use this feature, press the “Test/Silence” button.
You can silence the low battery warning “chirp” by pressing the Test/Silence button on the alarm cover.

To get a smoke alarm to stop chirping, press its hush/silencing button.
Stopping a smoke alarm from beeping is often simple. Get a step ladder and carefully reach for the alarm. Pressing the “Test/Silence” button on the front of the unit should stop it from beeping or chirping. If this doesn't work, grasp the device and turn it counterclockwise.
Some smoke detectors blink red constantly, indicating they're working properly. If the light blinks red and chirps, your battery may be running low.
3 Beeps and a Pause: EMERGENCY. This type of chirp means that smoke has been detected in your home. You and your family need to evacuate and call 9-1-1 once safely outside. Low Battery or End-of-Life: This type of chirp indicates it is time to replace your smoke alarm's batteries or the smoke alarm itself.
To get your smoke alarm to stop chirping if you've already changed the battery, first try draining any residual charge by holding the test button down for 15 seconds. If this doesn't solve the problem, clean the unit. A blast of compressed air will often remove the dust particles that are causing the beeps.
You may also be able to hit the silence button on any smoke alarm, which will cause all the non-initiating smoke alarms to silence so you can hear just the initiating one.
In most cases, you can find the 'hush' button on the smoke detector's cover.
Clear Residual Charge to Stop the Chirp
Press and hold the test button for 15-30 seconds. This will fully reset the smoke alarm and drain any charge left inside. Insert the new battery and close the battery compartment. Clean the unit with a microfiber cloth or a can of compressed air.
Take the individual chirping unit down: After shutting off the circuit breaker, take the individual unit down, remove the battery backup (if it has one), then hold the test button down for 15 seconds. This should reset your alarm and stop the chirping.
Stopping a smoke detector from beeping or chirping involves checking its batteries, cleaning it, or addressing environmental factors that may trigger the sound. If the problem persists, the unit may need replacing.
The smoke alarm is desensitized by pushing the “Test/Hush” button on the smoke alarm cover. If the smoke is not too dense, the alarm will silence immediately. If the smoke or debris is interfering with the sensor, the alarm will override the Hush.
How Long Does A Smoke Alarm Chirp Before It Stops Working? If you have a battery-powered smoke alarm, it will chirp for about a month before the battery dies. But if it's a hard-wired alarm with both AC power and a backup battery, it will keep chirping until you replace the backup battery.
The red LED will illuminate for 1.5 seconds every 8 seconds while in hush mode. This indicates that the alarm is in a temporarily desensitized condition. The smoke alarm will automatically reset after approximately 8 minutes, and sound the alarm if particles of combustion are still present.
You can silence the End of Life warning “chirp” by pressing the Test/Silence button. The horn will chirp, acknowledging that the End of Life Silence Feature has been activated. After approximately 2 days, the End of Life “chirp” will resume.
A single chirp from your smoke alarm every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed. To avoid those annoying middle-of-the-night chirps, change the battery once a year.
Do Not Disturb, the Ring/Silent switch, and Silent mode don't affect the alarm sound. If you use the Ring/Silent switch or Action button to turn on Silent mode or turn on Do Not Disturb, the alarm still sounds.
