Poinsett 76 is an Open Pollinated (OP) variety resistant to Downy Mildew, Powdery Mildew, Anthracnose, Scab, Fusarium, Angular Leaf Spot, Spider Mites and Cucumber Mosaic Virus. For a main crop slicer we like the hybrid General Lee.
Planting borage, scarlet runner beans, and other flowers near your cucumbers attracts bumblebees, whose presence helps deter cucumber beetles. Grow repellent plants. Flowers like nasturtium and marigolds, an herb such as catnip, and veggies like radishes and corn help keep cucumber beetles away. Keep the garden clean.
Developed at Cornell University, Marketmore 97 is a great slicing cucumber, and is one of the most disease-resistant varieties we offer. Bitter-free and burpless to boot! With vines up to 6 feet long, this northern cultivar bears loads of 9-11 inch, straight, white-spined cukes.
Eureka is a cucumber hybrid with intermediate resistance to Cucumber mosaic virus and Powdery mildew, making it an excellent choice in regions that are heavily affected by these diseases. If you want a pickle with a good disease resistance package, Eureka — you've found it!
There is no known cure for cucumber mosaic.
The disease affects a number of important vegetables and ornamentals including tomato, pepper, cucumber, melons, squash, spinach, celery, beets, and petunia. Tomatoes infected with the cucumber mosaic virus develop a slight yellowing and mottling of the older leaves.
Plant disease-resistant varieties of cucumber; Avoid crowding plants too closely; allow for good air circulation so leaves dry faster after rain; avoid watering leaves and stems; Clean up and dispose of symptomatic leaves and stems; and. Plant seeds or transplants multiple times during the growing season.
Additionally, some varieties have perfect flowers that have both stamens and pistils. Pollination is required to produce marketable cucumbers in most open-field production systems. Pollination of cucumber plants impacts the yield, size, and weight of fruit in non-parthenocarpic varieties (Figure 1).
Grow 'County Fair', a cucumber cultivar with genetic resistance to bacterial wilt.
Acidic-loving plants such as azaleas, blueberries, hydrangeas, rhododendrons, and roses will benefit from a sprinkling of coffee grounds around the base of plants. Vegetable crops that may benefit from coffee grounds include carrots, cucumbers, peppers, potatoes, and radishes.
Marigolds help to repel beetles (including the dreaded cucumber beetle!) and aphids. They will also help to attract many beneficials into your garden including the predatory wasp which can help to battle the cucumber beetle.
Bifenthrin, cyhalothrin, or cypermethrin will control cucumber beetles, squash bugs, squash vine borers, and pickleworms, but wait 3, 7, or 1 days, respectively, after spraying and before harvest. Table 1. Natural, Less Toxic Pesticides & Contact Pesticides to Control Cucurbit Insect Pests.
Garlic, leeks, and onions are highly pest resistant. Some root vegetables like radishes are resistant to insects, although slugs and snails will still eat them. Rhubarb is naturally pest-resistant due to the high levels of oxalic acid it contains.
Gynoecious Cucumbers
Gynoecious cucumber varieties produce all female flowers, which makes them significantly more productive than monoecious varieties.
Aromatic Herbs: Herbs like sage and rosemary, while useful in cooking, can inhibit the growth of cucumbers. They contain natural oils that can slow down the growth of cucumber plants. Brassicas: Plants like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower can compete with cucumbers for the same nutrients in the soil.
Poor weather and the use of insecticides can also affect fruit set on cucumbers. Cold, rainy weather during bloom reduces bee activity. Fewer bees visiting the garden results in poor pollination and poor fruit set. Apply insecticides in the garden only when necessary to avoid harming bees and other pollinators.
Combine a mixture of five parts water and one part of milk in a cleaned spray device. Make sure that the cucumbers get a lot of natural light. Spray the plant(s) with powdery mildew with the spray mix.
Pickling includes both preserving food by submerging in vinegar or by fermentation in a brine. In the case of pickling in vinegar, the acidity of the vinegar is what keeps enzymes from breaking down the food or micro-organisms from causing spoilage.
“These viruses are specific to plants and do not harm humans. The presence of mosaic won't cause fruits to rot prematurely but severely distorted fruit will have a different texture, so use your own judgement.”
Early plant removal is the best action as this reduces the level of virus in, and slows spread into, the crop. It is essential to spot the virus infection early and remove infected plants at the earliest stage because the virus can be present in plant sap well before any symptoms appear in the foliage.
In general, virus symptoms consist of various leaf and plant deformities, stunting and poor growth, or yellowing or mosaic or mottling pattern in the leaves. Leaves may be crinkled or wavy. Dry, corky areas or necrotic streaks may be present.
