Fire-Rated Mineral Core Wood Doors. Reserved for elevated fire-rating requirements, mineral core doors are composed of non-combustible materials that can be fire-rated for up to 90 minutes.
Fire rated doors are subjected to endurance testing where the specimen is exposed to extreme heat of up to 1925 degrees F for the maximum 180 minute rating. If the door remains in the frame with no through openings and limits flames, it is certified with an endurance rating of either 20/45/60/90/180 minutes.

A door with a three-hour fire-protection rating is usually required in walls that separate buildings or that divide a large building into smaller fire areas. The wall rating is four hours. Doors rated for 1-1/2 hours are required in 2-hour rated walls.
Most of the wood doors have a 20-minute fire rating. However, the MDF (medium density fiberboard) doors are available in 20-minute, 45-minute, 60-minute, and 90-minute fire ratings. Homeowners can choose from a variety of wood species and styles, to ensure that the fire-rated doors match the rest of the home's styles.
There are some very flimsy doors on the market that have no fire protection whatsoever, if anything they are merely fuel. But solid oak doors do offer some protection against fire if properly fitted.
1-3/4" Thickness Up to 90-Minutes
We have specially engineered and tested our fire doors to maintain a standard 1-3/4" thickness up to a 90-minute fire rating.
External fire doors are generally not required to be FD60, just remember that these doors are extremely heavy and are 55mm thick or more, 4 hinges are recommended.
20 minute fire doors, or 1/3 hour doors are used in 1 hour rated walls to separate corridors where smoke and draft control are required. In residential applications most doors separating the garage from the living quarters require a 20 minute label.
Design professionals occasionally request two hour fire rated doors. This often leaves distributors and manufacturers scratching their heads because there aren't any US code requirements for a two hour door. We believe these requests may be due to a misunderstanding of the International Building Code® (IBC).
To comply with fire codes and standards, fire-rated doors are often made with steel or fiberglass material. Fire-rated residential doors are designed to confine fires to a certain area of a residential building and prevent fire and smoke from spreading throughout an entire house or complex.
Some of the key requirements for fire doors that you should be aware of, as set out by the Approved Documents Volume 1 and 2, are as follows: In most cases, doors throughout the building should have a minimum of 30 minutes fire resistance, i.e. be FD30 rated, with consideration of compartmentalisation.
The first and most prominent way is to look at the edge of the door on the hinge side. All fire doors will have a metal identification tag (figure 1) . Sometimes this tag is painted over, but it will still be recognizable as an identification tag.
Many door manufacturers do not require astragals for most of their fire-rated pairs, although gasketing may be required at the meeting stiles to reduce air/smoke infiltration. Astragals or meeting stile gasketing may also be used for other purposes, such as weather, sound, or light.
Typically, fire doors sizes are 27”x78”, 30”x78” and 22”x78”, but may also be available in the smaller size of 24”x78” – Metric fire doors may also be available with standard sizes ranging from 626mm x 2040mm and 726mm x 2040mm to 626mm x 2040mm and 926mm x 2040mm. Deadbolts on fire doors must be labeled.
Components installed as part of a fire door assembly are required by NFPA 80 – Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, to be listed/labeled, so it is not permissible to install a deadbolt on a fire door if the deadbolt has not been labeled for this purpose.
How heavy are fire doors? FD30 fire doors weight approximately 45kg. FD60 fire doors weigh upwards of 75kg, so you can see why it is so important that the door opens and closes safely.
Therefore, for doors a rating of -/60/30 indicates the door will inhibit flames for 60 minutes and remain cool for 30. The dash (-) indicating structural adequacy means that the door is non load bearing however the fire door provides integrity and insulation protection.
Construction of a fire door
FD30 (30 minutes) fire doors are usually 44/45mm thick, as opposed to the standard door thickness of 35/40 mm, FD60 (60 minute) fire doors most commonly used in commercial settings are normally 54mm thick.
These are available in a range of thickness options up to 54mm thick, including a 35mm door which can easily be installed into residential properties' existing sized door frames.

Most fire doors have a solid-core construction which can include particleboard, flaxboard chipboard, and solid timber. On top of that, they're also fitted with what's called intumescent strips.
Solid core doors are usually mounted into either a hollow metal frame or formed aluminum frame, together forming a fire-rated assembly. Fire ratings of 60 and 90 minutes are commonly available with hollow metal frames, and 60-minute ratings are common with formed aluminum frames.

All JELD-WEN fire doors will have a certification label on the top edge of the door leaf. This label will state the manufactures name and telephone number, the Certifre certification number and it will also state the fire rating of the door for example FD30 (30-minute fire resistance).
