Rats can easily chew through softer materials like cardboard and plastic. They can even chew through harder things like wood and PVC pipes. But rats cannot chew through steel. They can't chew through anything stronger than iron.
Four Things Rats Cannot Chew Through
Any materials with greater strength than their incisors are too difficult for them to chew on or through. Examples of hard materials include: Steel, like sinks, ovens, refrigerators, steel beams, steel wiring in ductwork, and fencing. Iron to reinforce concrete and other structures.
Rat teeth are extremely hard and can gnaw through many materials, including wood, plastic, rubber, and even some metals. However, there are some materials that rats cannot chew through, such as steel, concrete, and glass. The hardness of rat teeth is comparable to that of aluminum and copper.
Rats can indeed gnaw through concrete due to the strength of their jaws and razor sharp teeth. The damage they cause to concrete can vary greatly depending on moisture, temperature, the size of both the concrete slab and the rat itself.
Their teeth are so razor sharp that they can gnaw through the hardest of substances including lead pipes, cinder blocks, solid wood doors, a four-inch-thick slab of concrete, even a half-inch thick sheet of iron. Rats have gnawed through iron cabinets to access food.
They can even get through softer metals like aluminum sheeting, lead, copper, iron, and gold. That means you shouldn't try to keep rats out of your home with gold! Since they can chew through softer metals, they can definitely chew through even the hardest of woods.
Ammonia: Ammonia is effective as a rat deterrent because it smells like the scent given off by predator's urine. Ammonia should be diluted at a rate of 2 cups in 6 oz of water. This mixture can be left out in areas of high rat activity to help scare them off.

Rats damage garden crops and tree fruit and may infest buildings where they can contaminate food and transmit diseases to humans and pets. Manage rats by removing food and shelter, reducing entryways into buildings, and trapping.

Not if you have a smooth surface that rats can't grip on to. Some surfaces most rats can't climb include: Tile: tiles have a smooth surface that makes it difficult for rats to scale. Go for smaller tiles to reduce the size of the grouting (that's one surface rats can grab onto).

Block the Holes With Mesh or Chicken Wire
If you do not wish to kill the rodents, be sure to flush the rat burrow first and then proceed to block the rat burrow once you are sure there are no rats inside. This is also a good method to utilise inside of your home if you notice burrows along walls.
The nest may resemble a messy ball-shaped structure or a heap of various materials. A rat nest typically consists of a collection of materials loosely piled up in a hidden location. These materials can include shredded paper, fabric, insulation, leaves, twigs, and other debris found in their surrounding.

What kills rats instantly? Snap type traps are among the most effective and quickest means to kill rats if placed properly and when a large number of traps are used.
When there are no animals in the nest, fill it with concrete or sand. If possible, locate the main entry hole and all of the exit holes and pack them full. You can pack steel wool or hardware mesh that rats can not chew through into the hole as well.
Recommended materials for rodent-proofing. Concrete: reinforced — minimum thickness of 2 inches; not reinforced — 3 ¾ inches. Galvanized sheet metal: 24 gauge or heavier. Perforated sheet metal grills should be 14 gauge.
Both ammonia and vinegar have sharp, acrid odors that rats detest. Ammonia mimics the smell of predator urine, creating a sense of danger, and vinegar's acidic smell irritates their sensitive noses.
