FLAME-SPREAD INDEX Materials such as stone, glass and ceramic tile are rated under 25 (CLASS A).
However, fire safety requirements do not necessarily apply for tiles, considering that ceramics are a fire-resistant material, most being manufactured at over 1000 degrees Celsius. For example, if a lighted cigarette is dropped on the floor, in most circumstances it will not do any damage to the tile.
All types of flooring that go on the floor need to meet the relevant fire regulations, carpet, all types of tiles, laminate, wood (solid and engineered), vinyl, rubber floors in gyms, etc.
A good rating (Class A or Class 1) in this test means the material is almost entirely non-flammable (doesn't burn easily). A bad rating means the material is highly flammable, and should not be used as an interior finish or building component.
Class 5: The Class 5 type of ceramic tiles are the strongest type and are meant for extra heavy type of foot traffic which is usually seen in very busy and large commercial establishments such as railway stations, airports etc.
Porcelain tiles are not flammable; therefore, they do not burn.
Ceramic is fire resistant.
Surrounding these spaces with ceramic tiles is an effective way of improving safety thanks to their fire resistance. Using ceramic tiles for the splashback behind the hob or on the floor around the fireplace protects the surfaces from hot saucepans, spilled hot liquids and sparks.
Ceramics 1 is an elective course open to students in Grades 9-12. Ceramics 1 is a one-semester elective course.
High fire is stoneware or porcelain clay fired to a temperature between 1,100°C and 1,280°C (2,012°F – 2,336°F). The clay by itself becomes non-porous, in cases even vitrified. When fired in high fire and with the bond of glazing, the clay becomes a strong and durable material.
How are ceramic floor tiles made? First the clay is molded into a desired shape. Next it is colored. Then it is fired in a kiln at very hot temperatures ranging between 1000°C – 1250°C (1832° – 2282° F).
Types of Fireproof Tiles
Porcelain and Ceramic Tiles: Both are known for their excellent heat resistance. Porcelain tiles, in particular, can withstand temperatures exceeding 600°C (1112°F), making them ideal for high-heat environments like kitchens and fireplaces.
These classes incrementally increase in the distance and speed measured that the flames travel across, with Class 4 having the fastest flame spread over the longest distance.
Abstract: In contrast to organic fibres, ceramic (inorganic) fibres, are not flammable and can maintain their physical strength and thus structure at very high temperatures. They find applications in very high temperature environments (>1000 °C).
Ceramic tiles can withstand very high temperatures up to 1600◦C. So, you don't have to worry about these tiles cracking to the lower temperatures in your stove.
SGFT also has ratings of 0 Smoke Density, 0 Flame Spread, 0 Fuel Contribution and 0 Fumes Emitted. The standards demanded for Structural Glazed Facing Tile in ASTM C-126 are very stringent.
Grade is the numerical ranking that reflects tile quality. Grade 1: Highest quality. Recommended for walls or floors. Grade 2: Similar to Grade 1, but with slight imperfections.
There are three main types of pottery/ceramic. These are earthenware, stoneware and porcelain.
Class 3: Light to Moderate Traffic: Ceramic tile for residential floor, countertop and wall applications. The most common residential floor tile. The glazing on these tiles is most often very durable, and the strength of the tiles can handle the stress of most traffic areas.

CERAMIC IS FIRE RESISTANT
Some floors can withstand fire… as long as it is put out immediately. But ceramic does not contain plastic and is fire resistant. We use fire in our homes for cooking and heating, but it has always posed a safety risk if it propagates away from the kitchen hob or the fireplace.
Ceramic is one of the few materials that does not burn or release substances of any kind even when it comes into contact with a naked flame.
If the heat source is more than 20cm away from the tiles, then it is safe to use most types of tiles. However, it is advised that you use porcelain tiles because this material acts the same way as fire-resistant bricks by absorbing heat without transferring it to the surrounding areas due to its density.
Ceramic tiles are manufactured using inert materials, pressed and fired to extreme temperatures in excess of 1200c. As ceramic tiles are inert, non-combustible material they are deemed to satisfy the requirements of the Australian Building Code.
Stone and tiles are one of the few parts of a building that can survive a fire or flood – stone and tiles that have been through a fire or flood will be extremely damaged, but they can often be restored back to original condition.
