If you have an electric cooktop, range hoods should typically be 20–24 inches above the heat source. For gas cooktops, your range hood should be around 24–30 inches above the stove. Range hoods are a great way to complement your cooktop or range and can help clear the air while you cook.
Overhead clearances
Australian standard 5601.1:2022, clause 6.10. 1.1, outlines clearances to range hood and exhaust fans. For a new installation, the clearance between the cooking support surface for the cooking vessels and the rangehood shall not be less than 650mm.
A 30-inch hood over a 36-inch cooktop is not recommended, as it may not effectively capture smoke and odors. For proper ventilation, the hood should be at least 36 inches wide.
A wood style island range hood should have at least 36” clearance from the cooktop, while a stainless steel range hood will require a 30” clearance.
Right distance electric cooktop
We also recommend a maximum distance 80cm in this case. If your range hood is mounted higher than that, it probably won't extract all the cooking fumes.
If you have an electric cooktop, range hoods should typically be 20–24 inches above the heat source. For gas cooktops, your range hood should be around 24–30 inches above the stove. Range hoods are a great way to complement your cooktop or range and can help clear the air while you cook.
Ventilation to the Outdoors (IRC M1503. 1): Residential range hoods should vent to the outside to effectively expel smoke, grease, and cooking odors, maintaining the home's air quality. This requirement is crucial for preventing the recirculation of contaminants within the home.
If your range top is 30 inches wide, go for a ventilation hood that's 36 inches wide. That way, you'll have an even overhang of 3 inches on each side. You always want your range hood to cover as much space over your range top as possible.
Generally speaking, we advise a distance of 750mm above a Gas Hob and 650mm above an Electric Hob. If your cooker hood was packed with an additional note on height use, please refer to this advised distance.
Hi, Most appliance companies recommend a distance between 24" and 30" between the range and the hood.
Measure the width of the area over the range or cooktop. Range hoods often come in 24, 30 or 36 inch widths. The hood should be at least as wide as the cooking surface, but preferably should be 6 inches wider.
Wall-Mounted Width: The most common widths are 30” and 36”. The range hood should be equal to or slightly larger than the range top.
You ideally want a rangehood that is exactly the same width as your cooktop or slightly larger. As it will need to be able to easily extract smoke and fumes whilst you are cooking.
It's recommended to have a minimum of 8" counter space on either side of the cooktop for ease of use and food preparation. If you're installing an island cooktop, you'll need at least 30” of counter space around the cooking surface to provide adequate room to work with pots, pans and ingredients.
650mm for gas cooktops and 600mm for electric cooktops between the cooktop and the rangehood. However, if the clearance is too high/big, you risk your rangehood being ineffective. Please check your stove and rangehood manual for the manufacturer's specifications and recommendation.
For example, high-use kitchens with a lot of stovetop cooking will be best placed with a canopy rangehood for the strongest filtration power, whereas smaller kitchens or kitchens with a focus on streamlined design might benefit from an integrated model.
If you have an electric cooktop, range hoods should be 20–24 inches above the heat source. For gas cooktops, your range hood should be 24–30 inches above the stove. Range hoods have multiple functions such as complementing your cooktop or range and helping clear the air of smoke while you cook.
650 mm minimum unless manufacturer's installation instructions (cooking appliance / range hood) require a greater distance.
The minimum height of a cooker hood above a gas hob is 750mm. For an electric hob, the minimum height is 650mm. There should be a minimum distance of 300mm between the sides of the hob and any cabinets or end panels.
Performance: The higher the CFM, the more powerful the range hood is at removing smoke, steam, and odors. A good range hood CFM depends on the size of your kitchen, the type of stove, and how frequently and intensely you cook. Generally, for every foot of your range's width, you need 100 CFM.
6-Inch Duct: Suitable for range hoods with CFM ratings up to 400 CFM, typically used in smaller kitchens or with lower-powered range hoods. 8-Inch Duct: Suitable for range hoods with CFM ratings between 400 and 900 CFM, commonly used in medium-sized kitchens or with moderately powerful range hoods.
Measure the height, width and depth of your kitchen in metres. Multiply all these numbers together to find out the volume of your kitchen (Height x Width x Depth = Volume). Now times this number by 10 to find the rate of extraction (Volume x 10 = Rate of extraction (m³/h))
Going through the exterior wall of your house requires less waterproofing. If you decide to vent through the roof, make sure the vent goes all the way outside and not just into the attic. When venting the range hood through an outside wall, make sure you're not going into a soffit or any other obstruction.
The exception to this section allows the use of listed ductless (recirculating) range hoods as an alternative to the ducted type. However, exhaust to the outdoors would be required if natural or mechanical ventilation was not provided for the kitchen area.
Using flexible duct for a range hood is generally not recommended. Range hoods are designed to effectively remove smoke, odors, and grease particles from the cooking area, and using the right type of ducting is crucial for optimal performance and safety.
