Epoxy grout: Waterproof, durable, stain- and shrink-resistant. The best grout in shower walls, backsplashes and other surfaces susceptible to moisture or stains. Ideal for use with unglazed and other tiles.
Standard grout isn't waterproof at all, only epoxy grout is. You can seal regular grout after it dries, but you have to do it every so often or else the grout will begin to absorb water again.
Epoxy grout is often recommended for showers because it is highly resistant to water and moisture. Epoxy grout is a durable, stain-resistant material that forms a strong bond and provides a waterproof barrier.
Jim Whitfield, manager of Technical Services at Mapei told industry professionals, “Because epoxy grout is so tough, it wears extremely well. It doesn't wear down over time and become a tile gutter—like cement grout can—where all the dirt and liquid and junk collects.”
Penetrating sealers are the most commonly used and offer high water, chemical and stain resistance. They provide protection without changing the appearance of the grout joint.
Whoever installed your floors most likely did not seal the grout because it needs time to harden and cure completely.
Grout sealer can be applied to grout in order to deter it from absorbing the water. Ultimately, grout sealer is a highly important part of the tiling installation process and should be applied in the majority of projects. Remember: Grout and grout sealer can be a laborious task.
However, caulk is usually a better choice in areas where moisture will accumulate, thanks to its flexibility. Caulk is also much easier to clean. While it is porous, it doesn't absorb dirt as much as grout does.
Epoxy grout is stain resistant and water resistant because it isn't porous like cement grout. This means epoxy grout lasts longer than cement grout. It also makes epoxy grout the best choice for both indoor and outdoor settings, particularly in spaces where you can expect a lot of moisture.
Epoxy grout is more durable compared to the traditional grout. Therefore, this means that epoxy grout is worth the higher expense. There are minimal to zero chances for this grout to crumble and start falling apart over time. For the case of cement grout, it tends to weaken.
Epoxy grout IS waterproof.
Choosing a grout color that's the same color as the tile will help make the space feel larger. For example, choosing white grout to go with white tiles, such as subway tile in a bathroom, visually opens up the room. White also looks good with gray, blue-gray and light gray tiles.
Floor Tiles: Epoxy grout is ideal for high-traffic areas due to its durability and resistance to cracking. However, cement grout may be sufficient for low-traffic areas if properly sealed and maintained.

PROGRIP WATER REPELLENT TILE GROUT Is a specially formulated grouting compound with exceptional water repellent properties, making it ideal for use in permanently wet as well as underwater conditions, i.e. swimming pools and showers.
Epoxy grout is the perfecting waterproofing grout for tiled wet areas. So, if you are starting a bathroom renovation or repair? Consider epoxy grouting as the grout of choice for all your tile regrouting needs.
Because epoxy grout is non-porous, it doesn't allow any water to penetrate its surface. That's why it's resistant to mold and mildew: without moisture, mold cannot thrive.
epoxy grout is a great choice when you are ready to re-grout a tile project. Because epoxy grout is so much stronger than other types of grout (particularly cement grout), you won't even need to remove all of your old grout. You can apply new grout right over the top of the old grout.
Grout, which is a cement-based material, is great for filling the spaces between tiles. But it isn't flexible enough to stay intact where a shower pan or tub meets surrounding walls. Nor is grout the right material for filling the corner joints on the walls. For these spaces, the right material is caulk.
Remember the tip on avoiding bleach, ammonia, and other harsh chemicals to clean grout. It would be best if you also avoided vigorous scrubbing. A rough brush and too much elbow grease will remove the dirt, but it could also remove the grout. Another way to prevent grout damage is to use a squeegee on shower walls.
Cons: Epoxy is expensive - somewhere around 3x-5x the cost of regular cementitious grout. Epoxy can yellow a bit as it ages and has a reputation for being difficult to install because of it's thicker consistency and quicker set time (for the record, we didn't find Ardex difficult to install at all).
With waterproof grout there is no water absorption, no discoloration and no disintegration. Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA grout is waterproof and stain-resistant (unlike regular cementitious grout) and is actually used for indoor/outdoor pools, spas and hot tubs.
To seal to perfection, we recommend using Universeal Grout and Tile Protector. This product is a solvent based sealer designed to deeply penetrate your grout. It is effective in preventing stains from oil and water-based liquids and it will not discolour your tiles.
