BlueTex™ vapor barrier tape is constructed with a super-strong PET Film, so you can continue to have exceptional strength and durability just like you see in our other BlueTex™ products.
The right tape is crucial for crawl space vapor barrier installation. Encapsulating a crawl space requires 2-sided butyl tape and vapor tape for seaming panels.
If a vapor barrier is damaged during a drywall installation or repair, it may be patched with housewrap tape, but small holes only marginally impact effectiveness. When patching drywall on an exterior wall, it's almost impossible not to damage the vapor barrier.
SELITstop® Aluminium-Foil Sealing Tape is the perfect addition to a vapour barrier to keep rising residual moisture away from your floor.
If you do full encapsulation then you would tape it. If just laying a moisture barrier it isn't always taped, and sometimes not even placed on the walls. So its a matter of how much sealing you desire, there' s not a 'correct' or 'incorrect'.
No, DuPont Tyvek is not a vapor barrier. It is breathable, allowing moisture vapor to pass through it.
Sealing Seams/Attaching to Footing …
All joints/seams in the vapor barrier application, both lateral and butt, should be overlapped 6″ (152.4 mm) and taped using PERMINATOR TAPE. The most efficient installation method includes placing PERMINATOR on top of the footing and against the vertical wall.
Joints of the vapor retarder shall overlap by 6 inches (152 mm) and shall be sealed or taped. The edges of the vapor retarder shall extend at least 6 inches (152 mm) up the stem wall and shall be attached and sealed to the stem wall or insulation”.
Barricade tape is brightly colored tape (often incorporating a two-tone pattern of alternating yellow-black or red-white stripes or the words "Caution" or "Danger" in prominent lettering) that is used to warn or catch the attention of passersby of an area or situation containing a possible hazard.
While Tuck Tape is commonly recommended for sealing wood and epoxy resin projects, other brands like 3M, Gorilla Tape, and Scotch also offer reliable options for this purpose. Look for tapes specifically designed for high adhesion and compatibility with wood and epoxy materials.
A high-quality crawl space vapor barrier can be an effective solution for many years, as long as it is not damaged or punctured along the way. Generally, a crawl space vapor barrier that has been correctly installed by a professional and made of high-quality materials can have a lifespan of 20 years or more.
The hole in the vapor barrier provides a localized area where diffusion is likely to increase. This is simply a matter of the relative resistance— between concrete/air and the vapor barrier materials— that the water vapor molecules below the slab encounter as they move upward.
This tape has been specifically designed to seal, seam PE Vapor Barrier.
Best Practices for Storing and Installing Vapor Tape
In order to ensure that the tape sticks well, remove any contaminates or dust prior to adhering the tape to a surface. Lastly, keep in mind the colder the environment is, the longer it will take for the bond to set.
Gorilla Glue Original
Gorilla Waterproof Patch & Seal Tape is the extra-strong adhesive tape designed to patch holes, cracks, gaps and tears.
Polyethylene sealing tape, fiberglass cloth tape, insulation seaming tape, and fiberglass insulation tape are all examples of vapor barrier tapes that make insulation successful and create effective moisture barriers.
The Intertape brand has one that says it's specifically for sealing vapor barriers so that's what I used. But to be honest... I felt like duct tape works better. I found some duct tapes that were rated to bond 20 yrs.
Acoustical Sealant
It remains flexible even after curing, which makes it an ideal choice for sealing vapor barriers.
You can see in the close up picture, the blue tape is quite a bit thicker than the red tape (4.1 vs. 3 mil). The bulk of that added thickness seems to be from additional adhesive; the blue roll is quite squishy and is really wavy, while the red roll is much firmer.
Lay the cut vapor barrier flat on the crawl space floor, ensuring it covers the entire area. Use a staple gun or adhesive to secure the barrier to the walls, piers, and any other vertical surfaces. Ensure a tight seal by overlapping the seams and using adhesive or tape to secure them.
Repairing your vapor barrier might be as easy as applying a few patches to punctures or retaping loose seams. But before you get out the tape, it's important to make sure you are properly equipped.
Tyvek® Tape is the packraft version of duct tape. It can repair everything from a pinhole to a packraft that has been shredded by a grizzly bear.
