If your runners have rubber soles, then clean them like rubber soles, not leather. Get out the general purpose cleaner and give them a generous scrub – the rubber won't mind. Just be careful not to get the kitchen spray on the leather uppers of your shoes – that would be a real downer.
Since most furniture polish is oil-based, a grease-cutting dish liquid can work well to remove it. Combine some dish liquid in water to make suds, skim the suds off the surface of the water with a cloth and wipe the suds onto the polished area. Continue washing the surface with the sudsy water until the polish is gone.

Polish should be used before wax, as it helps to restore auto paint that has lost its shine due to oxidation. Car polish does this by removing a very fine layer of the paintwork so the appearance of scratches is minimized as they settle into the coat. Car polishes vary in terms of their levels of abrasiveness.
Polishes are abrasive and for that reason we recommend only polishing your car as needed because each time you polish, you're removing a layer of material. If you over-polish your car, you will eventually thin out the paint and in extreme cases can cut through the clearcoat and the paint right through to the undercoat!
For stubborn stains
If the stain persists, try blotting with a towel dipped in a mixture of water and a mild dish soap (like Palmolive or Dawn). Be sure to blot gently; scrubbing rigorously can cause permanent damage to the leather.
Be sure to avoid these products when cleaning your leather: Baking soda, white vinegar, cream of tartar, and lemon juice.
