A pH-neutral floor cleaner is a gentle yet effective solution with a pH of around 7, meaning it's not too acidic or alkaline. This makes it safe to use on a variety of surfaces, protecting your floors while still tackling dirt, spills, and stubborn grime.
Since vinegar is an acid, it will actually break down the finish on the surface of your floor, and over time it will reduce the shine, and leave a dull appearance. Using vinegar and water to clean floors can also lead to an excessive amount of water on the floor, which can cause swelling and discoloration.
The Pine-Sol brand was acquired by Clorox from American Cyanamid's Shulton Group in 1990. The 2005 version of the original 8% to 10% pine oil based cleaner was acidic (pH 3–4) and could be used to remove bacteria from household surfaces. However, some of the products now contain bases (pH 10–11).
With a pH level of 5-9, neutral cleaners tend to be milder on both the surfaces to be cleaned and the soils that are to be removed. This also means they're generally less toxic and dangerous – baking soda, with a pH of 9, for example, is often recommended as a 'safe' or 'natural' cleaner.
