Cleaning out your closet once per year will keep the accumulation of clothes, shoes, and accessories from getting out of hand. However, you're not beholden to annual purging sessions. Biannually, weekly, or as needed will keep your closet free from clutter.
How long does it take to clean out your closet? Depending on the size of your closet, most likely 4 hours. If you have a small wardrobe that has been properly purged before you could do it in 2 hours.
The researchers found that a “sufficient” wardrobe consists of 74 garments and 20 outfits in total. As an example, they've suggested six outfits for work, three outfits for home wear, three outfits for sports, two outfits for festive occasions, plus four outdoor jackets and trousers or skirts.
I call it the “Rule of 3," and the guideline goes as follows: If I cannot visually imagine how I would realistically wear the clothing piece in three ways, it's out. Since the ways in which we wear clothing items vary, the rule can mean how you would wear it in different outfits or for separate occasions.
Purge clothes that you haven't worn in a year or two
It might be because they don't fit or flatter you, your style has changed or you've found them uncomfortable to wear. The honest truth is that if you're not wearing your clothes, then you probably don't need to keep them.
Most people are on a three-to-four week cleaning cycle, all things considered. On average, men wait a week longer than women to clean their bedrooms. Men clean their bedrooms every 30.04 days vs. every 23.59 days for women.
A regular person should have at least 7 shirts in their closet to have a clean one for each day of the week. However, our life circumstances vary and some women don't need as many to sustain them through the week.
A simple place to start is with your least-worn clothes, as that's where the majority of decluttering will happen. 'Start with pulling out anything that hasn't been worn for the last 6-12 months. Ask yourself why and then decide if you want to keep it or donate it.
The 20/20 Rule
Here's another rule from The Minimalists: the 20/20 rule! If you're on the fence about something and it costs less than $20 and would take under 20 minutes to replace, then go ahead and declutter it.
People own an average of 148 pieces
Most survey respondents seem to have between 77 to 155 pieces in their wardrobe with a few outliers in the 300+ range.
The Average Cleaning Is Very Efficient
Individual housekeepers are often tasked with cleaning between 10 and 20 rooms per day, with an average of 8-hour shifts. Housekeepers work very efficiently to meet this daily quota. High-touch surfaces now have increased importance in a housekeeper's cleaning routine.
But how many pairs of jeans should you own? You should aim for 4 to 5 pairs of denim jeans, excluding shorts. It is a good number to meet your everyday needs, even though a woman own 7 pairs on average, and men 6.
Depending on your laundry schedule, you might need more than 5 pajama sets. But for most people, 3 to 4 pajama tops and bottoms are more than enough to meet everyday needs. Keep in mind that you don't need to wash your pajamas too often.
So how much clothing is too much? There's no magic number of clothing items that you should have in your closet, but a good rule of thumb is only to keep clothes that you love and actually wear.
