Detergents contain chemicals designed to break down stains and dirt so that they can be easily removed during washing. However, if these chemicals remain in contact with the fabric for too long, they can start to degrade the fibres, potentially leading to holes or thinning of the fabric.
Add the garment to the washing solution and make sure the fabric is completely saturated. Leave plenty of room in the sink (never overload it). Allow the garment to soak for at least 10 minutes (up to 30 minutes is fine), and then gently squeeze the fabric through the water.
Mold and Mildew Growth: If clothes are left soaking for an extended period (especially in warm or humid conditions), they can develop mold or mildew, which can create unpleasant odors and be difficult to remove.
NOPE, NEVER!! NEVER soak any textile for that much time. The fibers tend to react and loose strength. This will result in color bleeding, loss of tensile strength, weaker weave, and bless you if the fabric had any finish on it, the coating will dissolve. You can always refer to the wash care tag on any garment.
Detergents and stain removers do kill microbes, but you have to bear in mind that detergents are strong chemicals that will eventually damage your clothes. Soaking clothes overnight gives the detergents time to start breaking down not just the dirt, but the fabric of your clothes themselves.

Instead, it uses a rapid spin speed to help quickly dry hand-washed clothes, soaking wet items and heavier fabrics. This cycle is also designed to drain your washer after a canceled load or interrupted cycle.
Detergent that isn't rinsed away also means that odor-causing bacteria isn't rinsed away either. Over time, without proper care of the machine, this bacteria can multiply and linger on your clothes, causing them to smell dirty or musky.
A white residue may be the product of using too much detergent per load, especially if the water isn't hot enough for the detergent to dissolve. This type of residue might appear clumpier than other types.
The heavier the detergent, the longer the rinse cycle should be. For example, clothes washed in bleach should generally be rinsed twice. This is due to the fact that stronger detergents are tougher to remove from laundry. This could also be a solution for washing clothes with tough stains or strong odors.
