Sloppy tile cuts, as in the shower niche image above, are an obvious sign of a bad tile job. Huge, uneven grout lines make even nice new tile look ugly. That's why we classify them as a prime sign of a bad tile job.
Unless the design is specifically meant to look rugged, uneven, or is a mosaic pattern, then crooked tiles are the first sign of a bad tiling job. Crooked tiles occur for several reasons – for example, grouting may be uneven or the installer may have neglected the use of tile spacers when allowing the grout to set.
To get a perfectly square corner, you want to aim for a measurement ratio of 3:4:5. In other words, you want a three-foot length on your straight line, a four-foot length on your perpendicular line, and a five-foot length across. If all three measurements are correct, you'll have a perfectly square corner.
The scratch test: Use a metal object, such as a coin or key, to lightly scratch the surface. Durable tiles will resist scratches, while inferior ones will show visible marks. The Water Test: Pour a small amount of water on the tile surface and observe. Quality tiles should repel water or absorb it very slowly.
Problem: A common problem that may be seen during tile installation, whether on the floor or on walls, is uneven and rough surfaces. If the floor or the wall is not level or flat, this may lead to uneven installation and sitting of tiles, which in turn may lead to bulging and gaps between the tiles that look ugly.
Check references
A reputable tradespersons should always allow a client to make contact with two or three of their recent customers so that enquiries can be made about the quality of their work and their conduct on the job. Ask the tiler for their references, whether they are qualified and their trade experience.
If you notice black, blue, green, or pink growth appearing in water-prone areas (most commonly your grout), it's a sure sign you have mold issues. Mold will also grow under tiles, weakening their hold and lifting them. Loose or uneven tile can be another sign of mold.
The golden rule when installing tiles is install on a concrete floor where possible and always ensure it's level by applying a levelling compound beforehand – watch this video to find out exactly how.
Visual Signs of Water Damage Under Shower Tiles
Discolouration or mould growth on shower tiles. Check where the grout is cracked or missing, as this could be a sign that water is seeping through and causing damage.
Sanded grout is also adept at hiding minor imperfections in the tile installation. However, the textured surface can be more challenging to clean and may trap dirt and grime. As the name suggests, unsanded grout does not contain any sand particles.
Tile. Tile floors have an incredibly long life expectancy – if they're taken care of. Ceramic tile can easily last 75 to 100 years, while natural stone (like marble or granite) can last well over 100.
Using bleach is one of the quickest ways to treat small areas of mould on your grout, tiles or walls. You should always wear gloves and a mask when working with bleach for protection. Mix 1 part bleach to 2 parts water & transfer to a spray bottle.
Homeowners insurance doesn't usually cover mold damage or removal unless it's the result of a covered peril. If the mold in your residence was caused by something sudden or accidental, such as a bursting pipe or some other covered incident on your policy, you may be protected.
Texture: Black mold on grout often has a slimy or fuzzy texture. When it first forms, it may appear slimy, but as it matures, it can become powdery and dry, which allows it to release spores into the air. Irregular Shapes: It tends to form irregular-shaped patches or spots on the grout.
No gapping between the tiles and walls
To inspect for gaps, place a straight edge against the tile and wall, and look for any spaces in between both areas. A properly done installation will not have any gaps. Additionally, corner and side wall cuts should be clean.
Tiling costs per m² usually work out around £100 per square metre, including the cost of tiles and other materials. But this figure varies a lot depending on each scenario. Tilers charge between £150 – 350 as their day rate for labour only. That's a wide range; a day rate is just one way that tilers charge.
Expensive tiles generally require less maintenance and are more resistant to wear and tear, ensuring they look great for years. Cheaper tiles may require more frequent cleaning, sealing, or replacement, which can add to their overall cost over time.
When tiles are installed, the edge of one tile can sometimes be slightly higher or lower than the edge of the adjacent tile. This height difference is know as tile lippage and it's not particularly desirable, as you might expect. It doesn't look attractive and in the case of floor tiling, it can create a trip hazard.
Tile damages & chip offs has to be checked; Colour variation has to be checked. Skirting tiles – offset from wall should be equal; edges & corners should not be sharp; floor tile's joints line should match with skirting tile; Also check for damages & colour variations.
