To clean your piece of furniture before painting, use a damp cloth and wipe over the surface. For stubborn dirt and grease, use warm soapy water but avoid harsh chemicals. For shiny laminates, use a sanding pad and lightly sand the surface. Wipe away any sanding dust before painting.
You do NOT need to sand the entire piece of furniture when you use Chalk Paint. Clean, clean, clean. Even though the furniture may look clean, 9 times out of 10 it is not. Dirt, grime and oily residue need to be cleaned away to insure that your chalk paint will have great adhesion.
Paint just won't stick to dirt, grease, dust or anything else that lurks on vintage and antique furniture. I've found the best way to clean pieces is to use Denatured Alcohol mixed with water (50/50 ratio). A scotch bright pad works great to clean off all that gunk.
Steps for Applying Chalkboard Paint to Wood
If you're coating bare wood, start by applying a primer. Chalk paint has a thinner consistency compared to traditional paint, so, once dry, sand the primer smooth and wipe the surface clean. Open the can of chalkboard paint and thoroughly mix the paint.
Chalk paint adheres to furniture beautifully without the use of primer and (usually) no sanding. A quick cleaning is typically all you need. With that being said, there's very rarely a piece of furniture that goes through our shop that doesn't need some type of prep work before paint.
When chalk paint isn't properly protected and sealed it can chip and scratch pretty easily.
Best Brush for Chalk Paint & Wax
It's best to use a natural bristle brush (often labeled as “pure bristle”) to apply Annie Sloan Chalk Paint instead of your more typical synthetic brush usually used for painting walls. It can be something as inexpensive as {this set of brushes}.
To clean chalk painted surfaces, use a soft cloth slightly damp with water or Clean-A-Finish. Once the surface is clean, go over it with a dry, soft cloth and wipe up any wet spots. If the surface looks dull after cleaning, use Chalk-Tique Paste Wax to get back some luster.
Simply prime the entire surface with a shellac base primer such as Zinsser® Cover-Stain®, Zinsser® B-I-N® Primer or Clear B-I-N® sealer according to the directions, and proceed with your project.
Why Is My Chalk Paint Coming Off When I Apply Wax? Some things lead to peeling: You missed the chance to clean your surface well, it must have something repelling the paint, or it doesn't adhere to the paint precisely.
I love cleaning with vinegar and water. It is cheap, environmentally friendly, and works well. To tackle the dirt on these pieces I just sprayed and thoroughly wiped, paying special attention to flat areas where dirt had collected over time.

Generally, it is always advisable to wait between 24 and 72 hours for chalk-painted furniture to dry well before applying Polyurethane. What is this? Leave the surface for an even longer time for better results. The longer you wait, the more durable the surface will be.
Just wipe away using a lint-free cloth. If you've applied too much Chalk Paint® Wax and not really realised until it's dried, you can still correct the issue. Some people recommend white spirits/mineral spirits but these are full of nasty chemicals.
It depends on the type of chalk paint and what was used to mix it. Some paints are not designed for washing and should be used with a sealant or wax after painting. Other types of chalk paint can be washed out using soap and water if you want to change the color later on.
