Water-damaged ceilings are high-priority issues that lead to rot, mold and a weaker house frame. Leaks must be fixed, and water-damaged ceilings repaired, as soon as possible.
Watermarks or Brown “Rusty” Stains– Oftentimes one of the most common signs of ceiling or roof water damage is watermarks or brown “rusty” stains on the walls, ceilings and/or attic. It can be a sign of a previous or current leak, so you should always have them checked out if they appear within your home.
You need to have the place where the water entered repaired. If it is not repaired or if the repair job is bad, then the water will continue to come in and you will need to paint that spot again, (and again, and again, every time it rains!) Until the leak is fixed you shouldn't try to paint over a water stain.
In addition to the risk of mold, water damage could compromise the integrity of your ceiling. If you leave it for too long, your ceiling could start to sage and could even collapse. Those water stains won't go away on their own, which is why it's important to find and address the cause of the stains.
The necessary period to dry out the ceiling will vary based on how wet the ceiling got. It can take a minimum of two weeks but sometimes up to four weeks. Ensure you address the leak's cause to ensure you are solving the problem rather than going in an endless circle.
As noted above, water damage will usually leave walls soft to the touch, or otherwise warped, buckled, and crumbled. It also tends to cause a musty smell and dark brown or yellow-tinted stains, lines, or rings in both ceilings and walls.
Drywall and plaster ceilings are known to fail and collapse under excessive or prolonged water exposure. While ceiling materials are designed to resist low level moisture and incidental surface wetness, heavier or prolonged exposures can cause the material to increase in weight and lose structural integrity.
Be aware that if the leak is significant, there is a chance that a section of the ceiling could collapse and this will cause significant damage.
A water leakage above the ceiling causes mold. Usually, mold grows behind walls, but sometimes you see growing on the ceilings. To ensure that mold is rising above the ceilings in your home, look for water staining on the ceilings. A borescope can be used to look inside the ceiling.
One of the easiest ways to know if you have water damage on the ceiling is to look for stains or discoloration. Usually, these will look like spots and can be any shape or size. Typically, they are brown, copper, yellow, or rusty colored.
You may ask yourself, “Does water damaged drywall need to be replaced?” But more often than not – the answer is yes! Wet and mold-filled wet walls will lose its structural integrity. Its insulation between your home's studs means an unhealthy and dangerous living space.
In general, homeowner's insurance policies cover damage caused by sudden and unforeseen catastrophes, such as a falling ceiling. The specifics of coverage, however, depend on the type of policy and the cause of the damage.
Water Damage
We often save the best for last, but in this case, we saved the worst. A big question homeowners often ask is “does wet drywall always need to be replaced?” and the answer is almost always yes. Water stains, discoloration, bubbling, peeling paint,.
If it is only a small amount and you can get the wall completely dry (as in a moisture meter deems it safe) then it is possible to salvage drywall with a coat of spackle and paint. However, if there is more water involved and the drywall is deformed or severely stained you may never be able to get the moisture out.
Any water leak carries the risk of mold growth, but that doesn't necessarily mean that mold growth is certain. The chance of mold depends on many factors, such as the severity of water damage, how quickly it was cleaned up and dried, and the extent of surfaces affected.
Does Water Damage Always Cause Mold? If the home is not completely dry within approximately 24 hours, mold will begin to grow. It doesn't matter if it's summer or winter, you'll begin to get mold. It's almost a guarantee that you will get mold in some capacity unless your water damage is extremely minimal.
Water damage mold appears fuzzy and nearly transparent when still new. Once fully developed, however, they form unmistakable dark spots on the affected surfaces. They often appear grayish-black. However, other types of mold can also be orange, purple, yellow, and green in color.
mildew and mold will develop within 24-48 hours of water exposure. Even worse, it will continue to grow until steps are taken to eliminate the source of moisture, and effectively deal with the mold problem. Use the diagram on the facing page to assess the extent of mold in your home.
The 48-72 hour window is critical to prevent mold growth as it usually takes 24 to 48 hours for mold to germinate and grow. Once fungus gets a hold on a drywall surface, it can be the breeding ground for thousands of spores and quickly spread in the air around the wall with every passing hour.
If you just cover up a water stain or paint over it, you are not fixing the actual problem. If you do not address the leak that caused the water stain, more water stains can show up on your ceiling. Untreated leaks can also lead to structural and electrical damage.
You might end up causing even more water damage—possibly to other parts of your house. A licensed plumber will have the job done right and done fast, with no mess. Then you can worry about taking care of the unsightly stain.
Cleaning the stained area of the ceiling with a mild homemade bleach solvent (one cup of bleach and three cups of warm water) will fade the stain and remove any lingering mildew, grease, dirt, or dust that can prevent primer and paint from adhering to the ceiling.
