Some folks suggest adding baking soda or Epsom salt to the soil will promote sweetness. No, it doesn't really work.
Add some or most of the following: compost, leaf mold, coarse sand, pine fines, planting mixes, kitchen vegetable scraps (and eggshells), some aged cow manure, and used clean (no disease) potting soil. The quality of your soil will determine which amendments to add.
